Fly fishing guides all have a responsibility to support fish health. At the Guiding for the Future course in Jackson, Wyoming, this spring, Keep Fish Wet’s Sascha Clark Danylchuk demonstrated how to best assess fish heath through a variety of tests that guides can employ while on the water.

OPINION: Clients look to outdoor guides for local knowledge, expertise on a sport and safety. Whether newbies getting started or grizzled veterans, guides should be saluted for keeping their skills, knowledge and professionalism continually sharpened.

At our recent Guiding for the Future course in Jackson, Wyoming, we were joined by Maggie Heumann of Trout Unlimited. She broke down a variety of local issues impacting trout, the four Lower Snake River dams, and much more.

The first of our 2026 Guiding for the Future courses took place in March in Fort Smith, Montana. Students and instructors came from throughout Montana to expand their knowledge, grow their skills, and develop professionally as guides and stewards of our waters and ecosystems.

Our Wyoming pilot program this month was a great success, and we are grateful to the Jackson Hole News & Guide for helping tell the story.

A group of six longtime fly-fishing guides stood outside in the rain April 15, watching Brant Oswald instruct on proper casting techniques.

Next in our G4F throwback series is the 2022 program on the Missouri River!

After our successful pilot program in 2019, another full cohort was on board - but COVID delayed the in person practicum until 2022.

For three chilly days, G4F students gathered at the Sterling Ranch in Craig, Montana to put their skills to the test. Despite frigid temps, we carried out on the water activities along with the indoor studies. Guest speaker and G4F ambassador gave a great talk on hosting destination trips as well.

Thank you to the guides and outfitter participants, instructors, coordinators, and our gracious hosts for keeping the momentum going through the 2nd Guiding for the Future class!

Today we are kicking off a throwback series celebrating each year of Guiding For The Future and each class of G4F ambassadors!

The pilot program took place in 2019 and was hosted at the B Bar Ranch in Emigrant, Mt.

This first practicum laid the groundwork for the success Guiding for the Future has had since. Thank you to all the early adopters who participated and made our program and community that much stronger for it!
