Today is Labor Day, a time when we celebrate hard work and dedication. But at The Wild Animal Sanctuary, true dedication never takes a day off. While many take a moment to rest, our incredible animal care, administration and operations teams are right here on the grounds today, working tirelessly to ensure our residents are safe, fed, and thriving 365 days a year.

From our dedicated staff to our passionate supporters across our 40,000-acre network, we are endlessly grateful for everyone who puts Animals First.

Our Wild Horses, Lions, Tigers, Bears, and wolves are roaming across their expansive open habitats today, living life on their own terms thanks to the extraordinary heart of our team.

Thank you to everyone whose hard work makes lifelong sanctuary, freedom, and dignity possible for rescued animals every single day.
Putting Animals First Since 1980.

Happy Monday from Capitano!

As part of Rocky’s band, this magnificent wild horse is thriving on the vast open range at our Wild Horse Refuge in Craig, Colorado. Spanning thousands of protected acres, our refuge provides a safe, natural haven where rescued mustangs can live out their lives wild, free, and completely unexploited.

Capitano’s life today is a beautiful, resilient reminder of what true freedom looks like. Despite everything he went through before arriving here, he savors and loves every single second of his life running wide-open with his band.

With the 2026 Wild Horse Refuge Symposium now concluded, we are thrilled to reflect on what an incredible experience it was to host our Inaugural Symposium!

Over the course of three memorable days, approximately 300 participants came together alongside more than 40 presenters, trainers (“Listeners”), and horse organizations to celebrate wild horses, exchange knowledge, build connections, and share a collective passion for their protection and well-being.

The Symposium offered an exciting variety of educational presentations, inspirational discussions, hands-on learning opportunities, demonstrations, and activities. Most importantly, it created a unique opportunity for people from many different backgrounds to come together, learn from one another, and celebrate these extraordinary animals (watch recap video below).

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make our inaugural event such a success—from our presenters, trainers, participating organizations, volunteers, and supporters to every person who traveled to attend. Your enthusiasm, knowledge, and dedication helped make the 2026 Wild Horse Refuge Symposium a truly special three-day event.

If you missed the Symposium this year, we hope you’ll make plans to join us next year! Come experience the fun, inspiration, education, and sense of community that made this year’s gathering so memorable.

“You occasionally see one, and it’s the thrill of a lifetime. But mostly all you ever see is a cloud of dust after they are gone. It’s their stubborn ability to survive that makes them so remarkable.”— Velma “Wild Horse Annie” Johnston
