Greene Land Trust is holding a fundraising raffle in conjunction with its "Seasons of Greene VII" art show at the Athens Cultural Center, 24 Second Street, Athens, NY.

This raffle supports Greene Land Trust in maintaining trails at its preserves, protecting and conserving The Willows, offering educational programming, and identifying and obtaining easements on additional properties with significant natural resources.

First Prize: Framed painting by James Cramer, "Field at Kings Farm" 1989, 16" x 24" Oil on Linen, donated by the Estate of Stanley Maltzman ($1,800 Value)

Second Prize: Private Fall Dinner Party for Eight (You and Your Guests) Catered at the Willows by Kim Bender ($1,000 value)

Third Prize: $500 Cash

The raffle drawing will be held October 11 during the closing reception of the "Seasons of Greene VII" art show at the Athens Cultural Center. You are invited to the reception but do not need to be present to win.

The forests, meadows and wetlands of Greene County are a cycling kaleidoscope of seasonal change. In autumn, our many nut-bearing trees and shrubs begin to drop huge harvests of nuts, and many bird species are on their migration south for the winter.

Join ethnoecologist Justin Wexler for an autumn exploration of the Potic Creek Preserve on October 4th from 11:00am-1:00pm. We will learn about the natural world through the lens of Northeastern Native languages, history, and folklore.

Dress appropriately for outside temperatures on the day of the walk and wear appropriate footwear for a 1-2 mile walk on potentially muddy trails over a hilly terrain.

Join Greene Land Trust's Rebecca Pinder for a walk and talk about earthworms on the trails at Potic Creek Preserve.

We look forward to seeing you at the Potic Creek Preserve for an informal “walk and talk” about earthworms in our watershed, and their forest floor habitat. We will discuss how most (but not all) of our earthworms in New York State are non-native. And we will talk about the particularly destructive invasive species and their effects on riparian habitats. We will do some moderate hiking and will look within the leaf litter and under rocks for specimens and then discuss what we find. Appropriate for all ages.

Rebecca Pinder studies the ecology of forest floors with her students at Columbia-Greene Community College, where she is a Professor of Biological Sciences. Much of her research takes place in local streams and at a model forest near the Catskill Mountains. She explores salamander biology and behavior, asking how these essential forest creatures and their environments are affected by invasive earthworms. She has a PhD from the University at Albany and has studied salamanders and earthworms in riparian corridors for over 20 years.

Are your maple leaves covered in large, dark spots? These spots are caused by a fungal infection called tar spot—but luckily, it’s nothing to worry about. Previously healthy trees with tar spot can bounce back after a year of defoliation.

🍁 Wondering if your maple tree has tar spot? Check the leaves for dime-sized and roughly circular brown or black spots that can merge together and cause the entire leaf to brown and fall prematurely.

🍁 Infected maples should be right as rain next spring! If your maples have tar spot the best thing to do is rake up and discard leaves when they fall, as the leaves harbor fungal spores.
