Arts Inside Arts Inside is focused on expanding access to art, writing, and other creative programs for incarcerated people in rural middle Tennessee

In 2017, AmeriCorps volunteer Hilda Vaughan founded Arts Inside in response to the lack of art programming in the Grundy County Jail in Altamont, Tennessee. Since then, our volunteers have taught classes in creative writing, painting, and other art forms at the Grundy County Jail as well as other facilities in the region. Every year, we hold public art exhibitions for our artists to celebrate their creative achievements and connect with their friends, family, and community.

Our Story

Arts Inside was launched in January 2017 as part of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office Reentry program at the Grundy County Detention Center. Partners and sponsors include the South Cumberland Plateau VISTA Project, the South Cumberland Community Fund, and Sewanee: The University of the South and Sewanee Dining. Arts Inside volunteers currently visit the jail several times a week for art and writing workshop sessions for both men and women.
