Boys Home of Virginia

Boys Home of Virginia "What's learned here is for life." Itโ€™s been many decades since Boys Home was founded, but many of the reasons why it was founded remain.

Originally an outreach of the Episcopal Church, Boys Home provided educational opportunities to children in rural Covington, Virginia. Soon after its founding in 1906, Boys Home expanded services to include shelter and care. Since then, Boys Home has provided a supportive environment, including education, shelter, and care to thousands of young men. Boys Home provides for young men in a healthy, s

upportive environment. Our programming is designed to offer a life-changing experience. Caring adult supervision, a welcoming school environment, a stable living situation, and opportunities to explore educational and career options help our students become responsible, well-rounded young men. Boys Home is not an orphanage, or simply a school. We provide food, clothing, shelter and guidance, almost entirely privately financed by individuals and churches. Time spent at Boys Home is a fresh chance for a young man to mold his character in positive, meaningful ways. Located in the beautiful Alleghany Highlands, our campus offers young men opportunities to grow and learn. The 1400-acre campus consists of eight residential cottages, an education center, a newly renovated gymnasium and student center, a dining hall, an applied trades center, a chapel, and administration buildings. Students learn to live in community, advance academically, grow spiritually, and develop work skills for the future. In addition, we encourage all residents to participate in sports, hike, camp, fish, and experience nature for themselves. Each new experience gives a child a better chance to become a successful man.

๐ŸŽต The Secret Lives of Boys Home Staff: Bev Johnson ๐ŸŽต

It's no secret that the staff at Boys Home are dedicated and talented individuals. But for some of them, those talents extend well beyond their roles on campus.

Meet Bev Johnson, music teacher at Boys Home and, outside of her role here, a singer with the Alleghany Chorale and a board member for the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council.

When Bev isn't in the chapel thoughtfully introducing students to new instruments or musical trends throughout our country's history, she's deeply invested in the arts community right here in the Alleghany Highlands.

Her passion for the arts has inspired students to extend their comfort zones and explore new hobbies, and that kind of influence doesn't stop at the classroom door.
We're lucky to have her, in more ways than one. ๐ŸŽถ

Made by Hand, Displayed with Pride

Something special is now on display at Boys Home, and our students made it with their own hands.

With the help of a guest welder and two Boys Home students from Mountain Gateway Community College, students welded decorative metal crosses that are now displayed right here on campus.

Students who are learning to weld produced something meaningful enough to hang on the walls of their own community. That's not just a welding lesson, that's true craftsmanship. That's pride in your work. That's leaving something behind that says, "I was here, and I made something worth keeping."

We're proud of every student who put in the work on this project. Every time someone walks past those crosses on campus, they'll be reminded of what these young men are capable of. ๐Ÿ’ช

Not every story from The Hill happens in a workshop or on a field. Some happen on a stage. ๐Ÿ’™

Boys Home student Auggie has been dancing with Cora Dance Alleghany (CDA) for two years, and this spring, he performed in not one but two pieces at the 2026 CDA Showcase.

His dedication, maturity, and consistency earned him a spot in the Cora Youth Company, and his instructors say he's become a genuine role model for younger dancers in the community. ๐Ÿ’ซ

It's a program you might not expect, and one we think is worth knowing about.

An Open Invitation: Come See Boys Home This Summer โ˜€๏ธ

There's something that happens when supporters visit Boys Home in person that no newsletter, email, or social media post can fully capture.

They walk the campus, meet the students, and sit across the lunch table from a young man who tells them โ€” in his own words โ€” what life on The Hill has meant to him.
And they leave differently than when they arrived.

Summer is one of our favorite times to welcome visitors. The pace is a little different, the campus is alive with activity, and the warmth of this place is best experienced firsthand.

Throughout the year, our donors and supporters tell us again and again that seeing the work of their generosity in real life is one of the most meaningful parts of their relationship with Boys Home. That a student shook their hand. That another showed them something he built in the trades shop. That they finally understood โ€” really understood โ€” what all of it is for.

If you've been supporting Boys Home from a distance, or if you've simply been curious about what we do, this summer is a wonderful time to plan a visit.
We would love to welcome you to campus.

โšพ Key Club Members Step Up for the Covington Lumberjacks! โšพ

On Friday, June 5, three Key Club members headed into the community to help out with a Covington Lumberjacks game, and by the sounds of it, they had a great time doing it!

Our students were excited to get out into the community, meet some of the Lumberjacks players, and be part of the energy of a live semi-pro baseball game. There's something pretty cool about being behind the scenes of an event like that, and these young men showed up ready to help.

Community service doesn't always look like early mornings and hard work. Sometimes it looks like a Friday night at the ballpark with your teammates, doing your part to make something special happen for your community. ๐Ÿ’ช

Either way, our Key Club members keep showing up, and we couldn't be more proud of the way they represent Boys Home out in the world.

Thank you to Olde Town Covington for welcoming our students and making this opportunity possible! ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒŸ Meet Ga'Vine โ€” Boys Home's Newest Community Member! ๐ŸŒŸ

We'd like to introduce Ga'Vine, the first student to join the Boys Home community through our first round of Enrollment Days!

Ga'Vine, welcome to The Hill. We're so glad you're here. ๐Ÿ’š

Our admissions team has moved toward a more intentional enrollment structure, allowing students to enter Boys Home through a cohort-based system.

This means incoming students have the opportunity to bond with classmates who are starting at the same time, get familiar with campus life together, and settle into all things Boys Home with a built-in support system from day one.

It's a small shift with a big impact. Starting something new is always easier when you're not doing it alone. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Interested in starting your son's journey?
โœ”๏ธ The process starts with an application. Acceptance is pending a virtual interview for qualified students, so the sooner you get started, the sooner we can begin the conversation about whether Boys Home is the right fit.

โŒ Don't wait, spots are limited and filling quickly.

Hunter Education Course at Boys Home! ๐ŸฆŒ

On May 31, four students and one staff member joined Farm Manager Linda Angle and Maintenance Supervisor Ronnie Angle for a seven-hour Hunter Education course sponsored by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

Using training models, students learned important hunter safety concepts, including how to cross fences safely and understand zones of fire.

Fun fact: Boys Home has three staff members who are certified to teach this course! ๐Ÿ’š

Hard at work! ๐Ÿ’ช

Afternoons at Boys Home belong to the students โ€” whether that's downtime or off-campus adventures. But a lot of them have been choosing to work.

From cleaning up and moving offices in the Administration Building to enhancing the raised beds and greenhouse on the farm, the students take pride in what they do. (Despite some of their faces, we promise!) ๐Ÿ˜„

Our community partners continue to show up for Boys Home in ways that make a real difference, and this one hits close to home. ๐Ÿ

Dominion Energy recently made a generous donation to Boys Home that directly impacts the health and safety of everyone on our campus:
๐Ÿฆบ Safety glasses and gloves for our Trades program students
๐Ÿ’“ Eight AED units for our campus

Eight AEDs. That's eight more chances to save a life in an emergency. For a campus that's home to students, staff, and houseparents. That kind of investment in safety is so meaningful to us.

And the safety equipment in our Trades program means students can continue developing real-world skills with the protection they need to do so safely.

We are incredibly grateful to Dominion Energy for seeing a need and meeting it. This is what true community partnership looks like, showing up where it matters most.

Thank you for investing in a safer Boys Home campus. ๐Ÿ’š
