Honoring The Genesis: 80 Flames of Fortitude—the inaugural line of the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter.

As the first, they hold a special place in our chapter’s story. Their sisterhood, service, and fortitude helped strengthen CAAC’s foundation and continue to shape how we serve Newton and Walton counties today.

Keep bringing the heat, Flames. We’re grateful for all you bring to our chapter.

Today, we close out Black Maternal Health Week 2026 with gratitude, love, and a renewed commitment to Black Mamas everywhere. 🌸✊🏾

This week, we learned. We shared. We advocated. And now, we act.

The Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. stands firmly in solidarity with the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and the entire Black maternal health movement — .

✊🏾 Here's how you can keep the momentum going BEYOND this week:

Black Mamas are fighting for their health – and the environment they live in matters more than most people realize. 🌍

This , we're connecting two urgent issues: reproductive rights and environmental justice.

📊 Reproductive Rights:
• Black non-Hispanic women accounted for the highest proportion of abortions in 2022, and the reversal of Roe v. Wade has worsened disparities in abortion access. (CDC, 2024)
• As of January 2026, 41 states have abortion bans in effect. The impact of restrictive abortion laws disproportionately affects Black Mamas who already face systemic barriers to care. (Guttmacher, 2026)

🌿 Environmental Justice:
• Exposure to reprotoxins – harmful substances found in personal care products, water, air, and pesticides – disproportionately affects Black and Latina pregnant people, increasing risks of preterm birth, infertility, and pregnancy loss.
• Climate-related disasters such as extreme heat, flooding, and displacement are linked to depression, anxiety, and psychiatric emergencies during pregnancy.
• Black communities are more likely to be located near environmental hazards, compounding these risks.

The Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. affirms: a truly just future for Black Mamas requires clean environments, bodily autonomy, and equitable healthcare. These issues are inseparable.

Access to quality care should not be determined by the color of your skin. But for Black Mamas, too often – it is. 🏥

This , the Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is shining a light on the barriers Black women face when seeking maternal healthcare.

📊 The reality:
• Nationally, 12% of Black women lack health insurance coverage, compared to 7.6% of white women. (National Women's Law Center, 2023)
• Medicaid pays for over 60% of births to Black mothers – making Medicaid policy directly tied to Black maternal health outcomes. (CDC, 2021)
• 30% of Black women reported experiencing mistreatment during maternity care – the highest rate among all racial/ethnic groups. (CDC, 2023)
• Perinatal community-based care models, including doulas and midwives, have been shown to improve outcomes for Black women who face barriers to traditional care.

When Black women are dismissed, disrespected, or denied care, lives are lost. Systems must change.

✊🏾 What YOU can do:
• Know your rights as a patient.
• Support Black-led maternal health organizations.
• Advocate for Medicaid expansion and doula coverage in your state.
• Share this post to raise awareness.

Did you know that Black women are 3.5x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women? 💔

This is not a coincidence – it is the result of decades of systemic racism, healthcare inequities, and the dismissal of Black women's pain and concerns.

📊 Key Facts:
• In 2023, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women was 50.3 deaths per 100,000 live – nearly 3.5 times the rate for non-Hispanic white women. (CDC, 2025)
• Maternal deaths decreased from 2022 to 2023 for ALL racial/ethnic groups EXCEPT Black women. (CDC, 2025)
• More than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. (CDC, 2024)

The Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. believes that Black Mamas deserve to survive – and to THRIVE – before, during, and after pregnancy.

This , we call for accountability, equitable care, and systems change that puts Black lives first.

Share this post and help spread awareness. Every share could save a life. 💜

Today marks the start of Black Maternal Health Week 2026 ( )! 🌿

This , let's talk about something that doesn't get enough attention: Black maternal mental health. 🧠💜

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are among the leading complications of pregnancy and childbirth – and Black women are disproportionately affected, yet less likely to receive help.

📊 What the data tells us:
• Mental health conditions affect up to 1 in 7 pregnant and postpartum women nationally. (CDC, 2022)
• Although Black women are MORE likely to develop perinatal mood disorders, they are LESS likely to receive treatment than white women. (Kozhimannil et al., 2011)
• In the United States, 29 to 44% of Black women experience postpartum depressive symptoms, yet few are properly identified or connected to mental health services. (NIH, 2023)

The stigma around mental health in our communities is real – but so is the need for care, support, and healing.

💬 If you or someone you love is struggling after pregnancy, please know: you are not alone, and you deserve support.

The Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. encourages our community to check in on the Black Mamas in your life – and to advocate for accessible, culturally competent mental health care for all.
