🐾💙 Faith, fellowship, and some very special four-legged heroes!

Today’s NCSO Faith & Blue Weekend event, the 7th Annual K-9 Blessing and Community/First Responders Luncheon, was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate service and community.

We appreciate the K-9s and their handlers whose teamwork helps protect our communities. From locating missing people to detecting dangerous substances and assisting with searches, law enforcement K-9s serve in many important roles.

And then there was Annie the 911 Therapy Dog! 🐶💕 She was so well behaved and sat so pretty, like a little lady, bringing smiles just by being herself.

The sweetest part? Annie is going to visit us at Washington Street Community Center soon! We already know our babies are going to love her, and we can’t wait to see their faces when they meet this special girl! 🐾❤️

📚 Have one hour to help a student grow?

Washington Street Community Center is recruiting retired teachers, educators, and community volunteers to provide homework help and tutoring as part of our WSCC Literacy Campaign.

Our goal is to help elementary students strengthen their reading and math skills, improve their scores, and build confidence in learning.

🕝 Monday through Thursday, 2:30–3:30 PM
📍 4138 School Street SW, Covington, GA 30014

Help a child work through a math problem, practice reading, or understand a homework assignment. Contact us to discuss which day or days you can volunteer.

✅ All volunteers must complete a background check before participating in the program.

🌟 Discovery Lab: The Week in WOW! 🌟

Another week of learning, growing, celebrating, and discovering at WSCC is in the books!

This week reminded us that learning does not happen in just one way. Sometimes it looks like a student finding the courage to read aloud in front of others. Sometimes it means working together to solve a problem, getting your hands dirty in the garden, moving your body while practicing math, or simply celebrating the people who make our Discovery Lab community special. 💙

Our students continued building skills in confidence, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, reading, public speaking, and critical thinking, all while having plenty of fun along the way.

We also took time to celebrate our August and September birthday students and staff! 🎂🎉 Every child deserves moments when they feel seen, valued, and celebrated, and we loved making their birthdays a little extra special.

One of our favorite parts of the Discovery Lab is watching students try something new, encourage one another, and realize, “I can do this!” Those small moments are where confidence begins to grow. 🌱

A huge thank you to our WSCC staff and Oxford volunteers for continuing to show up, encourage our students, and help create another successful week of meaningful afterschool learning. ❤️

🌟 Discovery Lab: The Week in WOW! 🌟

What a week at WSCC!

Our students were challenged to move, think, create, communicate, and work together, and they showed us just how much learning can happen when children are given space to explore and try something new.

From physical challenges that required concentration and coordination to group activities that encouraged creativity, listening, and collaboration, this week was all about building confidence through experience.

One of our favorite moments was watching students encourage one another, share ideas, laugh through the challenges, and keep going when something didn’t work the first time. And yes, we even squeezed in a little dance break! 😂💃🏽

We’re also proud to see our students practicing something just as important as any academic skill: learning how to contribute their own ideas while making room for the voices of others.

A special thank you to our Program Leaders Mrs. Elkins, Mr. Chaney, Ms. Hardeman, Ms. Asher, and Mr. Elkins, and our Program Aides, and Oxford volunteers who continue to make Discovery Lab a place where learning feels exciting, hands-on, and meaningful. ❤️

Another Week in WOW is officially in the books, and our students are continuing to grow in confidence, teamwork, creativity, and curiosity.

🌟 WHO ARE THE PEOPLE IN OUR WSCC NEIGHBORHOOD? 🌟

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on our very own Mrs. Leila Elkins, WSCC Program Leader of Enrichment! 💙🏡

Now, when we say ENRICHMENT, Mrs. Elkins apparently heard, “Teach them EVERYTHING!” 😂👏🏾

From Sign Language and Japanese to gardening, PE, and nutrition, Mrs. Elkins gives our students opportunities to learn, move, create, communicate, explore new cultures, and serve others.

And we especially love what happens in our community garden. 🌱🥕 Our students don’t just plant vegetables. They learn how to care for them, harvest them, and share what remains with people in our community who need it. That’s education with a purpose. ❤️

Mrs. Elkins, thank you for bringing so many different experiences through the doors of WSCC and for showing our children that learning happens everywhere, not just behind a desk.

🌟 WSCC Discovery Lab: The Week in WOW! 🌟

Our weekly view of what goes on inside of the WSCC Discovery Lab,,,

CONFIDENCE UNLOCKED: WSCC KIDS ARE BUILDING BIG SKILLS! 💪🏽✨

The Spaghetti Challenge was all the rage at WSCC this week! 🍝🏗️

Our Discovery Lab students put their creativity to the test while learning that great ideas take communication, patience, teamwork, problem-solving, and sometimes a few do-overs!

But that wasn’t all. 🙌

This week, our students also:
✨ Learned basic sign language
✨ Practiced teamwork and communication
✨ Learned how to give a proper introduction
✨ Practiced speaking clearly and confidently
✨ Stepped outside their comfort zones and tried something new

🏅 THIS MONTH’S GOAL: THE CONFIDENCE BUILDER BADGE!

The Confidence Builder Badge celebrates students who are learning to believe in themselves, communicate with confidence, work well with others, and show courage when trying new things.

🛂 THE DISCOVERY LAB PASSPORT
Every Discovery Lab student has a Discovery Lab Passport that follows their learning journey throughout the program.

As students complete hands-on challenges, practice new skills, and demonstrate what they have learned, they earn special Discovery Badges to add to their passport.

This month, they’re working toward the Confidence Builder Badge! 🌟

To earn their badge, Discovery Lab students must:
✅ Introduce themselves using their name, a clear voice, eye contact, and positive body language
✅ Participate in a team challenge and contribute ideas
✅ Practice encouraging and listening to their teammates
✅ Learn and demonstrate a basic sign language greeting or introduction
✅ Speak or share an idea in front of the group
✅ Show courage by trying something new, even when it feels challenging
✅ Complete a short reflection about something they are now more confident doing

At WSCC, we’re not just keeping children busy after school. We’re creating opportunities for them to discover their strengths, use their voices, develop life skills, and grow into confident young leaders.
