Welcome to A Mustard Seed Outreach 🌱

A meaningful life includes having choices, friendships, a place to belong, and opportunities to contribute. Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve support that makes those things possible.

That’s the work we’re building.
Our people are our programs.

A Mustard Seed Outreach is a nonprofit helping individuals and families navigate resources, find support, and take steps toward greater independence. Our work brings together information, education, advocacy, support with decision making, and opportunities for community involvement and supported independent living.

That mission takes shape through efforts such as our Day Program Without Walls, where activities and learning happen out in the community, and The Petty Place, a supported independent living home.

🐺 And who is the Wolfpack?

The Wolfpack is a community of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities whose lives and experiences connect with our work. Their page shares the friendships, adventures, accomplishments, and everyday moments of the people you’ll often see here.

The two pages serve different purposes while sharing a commitment to belonging and opportunity. The Wolfpack page helps you get to know the people. This page explains the nonprofit’s work, shares resources and updates, and connects supporters with ways to help.

Our fundraisers are one way to help. A monetary gift is another and it helps sustain the work happening between the events and campaigns: connecting families with resources, advocating for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and creating opportunities for meaningful community life.

We use Givebutter to keep our donations and fundraising opportunities in one place. Here’s how giving works:

Update on Lizzy;

She is officially out of surgery! She is currently very unhappy and absolutely detests her new "accessory."

Naturally, she woke up with an appetite and was immediately ready for her McDonald's Frappe. She has also placed an extensive recovery order, specifically requesting chicken and rice nachos, Chinese food with an egg roll, and chicken nuggets! 🍟🥡 and spinach of all things!

If all goes according to plan, she should lose the eye patch tomorrow morning when the surgeon uncovers everything and checks on her progress. Keeping our fingers crossed for a smooth night of "accessory wear" and check-up in the morning! 🤞❤️

Girls got her praise music on, drugs given, getting her grove on, waiting to get that IV started...as many of you already know, Lizzy is legally blind.

Todays procedure on her right eye is incredibly critical as she has no vision in her left eye and has endured many, many surgeries on her right eye over the years—including treatments for a torn and detached retina and cataract removal. In just a bit, she is headed back to the OR to remove another cataract and clear out scar tissue.

The struggle will be very real in just a few hours.

When she wakes up, her one seeing eye will be patched, leaving her completely in the dark.

Despite all of our conversations and role-playing beforehand, we aren't sure she fully understands what is ahead of her—and us—over the next few days.

Please say her name in your prayers today. We ask for:
• Steady hands for her surgeon and the entire OR team.
• Peace and calm for Lizzy as she wakes up unable to see.
• Strength and patience for those of us who will be spending hours by her side, keeping her comforted and entertained.

Thank you all for wrapping our warrior in so much love. 🙏❤️ Will update everyone when she is out, and her patience will allow!

There is a part of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities that deserves more honest conversation: behavioral crises.

These moments can take an intense toll on an individual, their caregivers, and everyone working to support them.

Behind a crisis may be pain, fear, sensory overload, difficulty communicating, or needs that have gone unrecognized. Understanding what is driving someone’s distress takes time, patience, and individualized support.

It can also take everything you have to get through the storm.

At A Mustard Seed Outreach, our commitment is shaped by life with our own. We know the exhaustion, the uncertainty, and the heartbreak of navigating systems that have not always been equipped to meet their needs. Those experiences inform our work and remind us why continued learning, professional collaboration, and careful preparation matter.

We believe support should begin well before a crisis. That means recognizing early signs of distress, building trust, supporting communication, and having clear, individualized plans that caregivers and staff understand and can follow.

Even with thoughtful support, crises can still happen. When mobile crisis or emergency services are needed, seeking that help is a responsible part of protecting everyone’s safety. Our goal is to reduce preventable escalation and ensure that any response protects the person’s dignity as well.

We are committed to doing the ongoing work: strengthening our protocols, learning from difficult moments, partnering with appropriate professionals, and helping caregivers navigate a process that can feel deeply isolating.

To the families and caregivers weathering these storms: we see the work that often goes unseen. Your exhaustion deserves acknowledgment. Your family deserves support.

Every person we serve deserves understanding, dignity, and a support system willing to keep showing up, including on the hardest days.

Do you receive a NOW or COMP waiver? Are you waiting for one—or helping someone use theirs?

Georgia State University, in partnership with the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities, wants to hear from you.

Researchers are studying the costs, benefits, and everyday impact of Georgia’s NOW/COMP waivers. They’re inviting people who receive services, families on the Planning List, providers, and direct support professionals to share their experiences.

Selected participants will join a one-time virtual group discussion and may receive a $50 gift card.

At A Mustard Seed Outreach, we know there’s a story behind every waiver: what support makes possible, what families are still waiting for, and where the gaps remain. This is an opportunity to bring those experiences into research that can inform future decisions.

In ANCOR’s 2026 national survey, 55% of responding disability service providers reported turning people away because they didn’t have enough staff.

Behind those numbers are adults ready for their next chapter and families trying to figure out how to make it possible.

That’s why the work of A Mustard Seed Outreach includes both supported independent living through The Petty Place and opportunities to participate, build friendships, and give back through our Day Program Without Walls.

Direct support professionals help make those everyday opportunities possible. Their work takes patience, skill, trust, and consistency. Supporting that workforce is part of building a future our families can count on.
