Fall is almost here, and Covington Parks & Recreation has two great opportunities for local students to get involved and active!

⚽ Covington Youth Soccer League
Open to students in kindergarten through fourth grade, the league runs Sept. 13–Oct. 18, with games on Sundays. Location and practice days will be announced.

🎮 Covington E-Gaming Club
Open to all sixth- through eighth-grade students, this after-school esports program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30–5 p.m., Sept. 15–Nov. 5 at the Boys & Girls Club, 30 W. 26th St. Students do not have to be Boys & Girls Club members to participate.

Thank you to the many Covington residents who came out this past Saturday to donate pieces of brick, rock, and glass for the CAIRN sculpture.

A wine bottle from Monte Cassino Vineyards, a piece of wedding decor from Mutter Gottes, pottery from Baker Hunt Art & Cultural Center, a bird bath from Botany Hills, unearthed garden stone from Peaselburg, a carved sandstone piece from the old St. Patrick's Church, and so much more!

You still have a chance to contribute. This Saturday, July 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Covington Farmers Market. Residents are invited to donate small, clean, and hand-carriable materials that hold personal significance - such as brick, stone, concrete, or glass - to be permanently incorporated into the sculpture.

The project's artist will be on-site with design prototypes to answer questions, and as a special thank-you, the first 100 participants to contribute materials will receive a free, custom-designed CAIRN T-shirt!

Join us on Monday, July 13, from 4–6 p.m. at John G. Carlisle Elementary School (910 Holman St.) for the Pike Street Development Open House.

Earlier this month, the City of Covington entered into a purchase agreement to acquire the property at 257 Pike Street, creating an opportunity for a collaborative redevelopment project with community partners.

Now, we want to hear from you. Residents, business owners, and community stakeholders are invited to share ideas and feedback to help shape the future of the site and guide the development process.

This year, The Center for Great Neighborhoods celebrates 50 years of community building in Covington, KY.

The Center began in 1976 as the Covington Community Center, and served the emergency needs of low-income residents, provided recreation activities for youth, and helped residents address community issues. In the mid­1990s, our programs started to focus more heavily on community development efforts and building a stronger network of resident ­led neighborhood groups. By the 2000s, we began addressing more systemic issues like blight and lack of affordable housing- since that time, The Center has improved more than 65 vacant and blighted properties, including residential and commercial properties, homes for sale to moderate income homebuyers, affordable rental units, and façade improvements for local homeowners.

The Center for Great Neighborhoods’ mission calls us to engage residents and work to bring them into the creation of the future version of our community. We know that a truly vibrant and dynamic community happens when it is inclusive and harnesses the contributions of everyone.

At The Center, we build capacity and train community leaders to be able to accomplish everything from arts and creative placemaking projects to public space improvements. We also develop affordable housing, create programs to improve property conditions, serve Covington youth by creating safe spaces for kids to play and learn, and support healthy lifestyles and small businesses, in part by managing the Covington Farmers Market.

For 50 years, The Center for Great Neighborhoods has worked with residents, organizations, and stakeholders in Covington, KY to create positive change and the civic space that allows everyone in the community to work collaboratively on the future they want.

Covington residents have a unique opportunity to weave their personal histories into CAIRN, a landmark public art installation coming to the new Covington Central Riverfront neighborhood!
