Newton County will be under a Winter Storm Watch from 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, through Sunday morning, Feb. 1, 2026, and an Extreme Cold Watch will take effect Saturday night through Sunday afternoon. As we continue to monitor weather conditions this weekend, please keep safety (and staying as warm as possible!) your top priority. ❄️

While we know the major ice storm forecast last weekend did not impact us as much as anticipated, don’t let your guard down just yet. Newton County could still see up to two inches of snow, and we’re also concerned about strong wind gusts that could cause downed trees and power lines.

As a reminder, for your safety and the safety of our first responders, please stay off the roads ‼️ if conditions become hazardous this weekend, unless travel is absolutely necessary. Not sure if roads are hazardous? If snow is accumulating, no matter the amount, roadways are hazardous and slick.

UPDATE FRIDAY 1/30/26 - UPGRADED TO EXTREME COLD WARNING THROUGH SUNDAY, 2/1/26 MORNING
- - - -
❄EXTREME COLD WATCH❄
As of Thursday afternoon, January 29, 2026, Covington/Newton County is not only subjected to a Winter Storm Watch from 7 PM Friday, January 30, 2026 to Sunday morning, February 1, 2026, we will also be under an Extreme Cold Watch starting Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.

🔺An extreme cold watch can include wind chills - or "feels like temperatures" - of 5 degrees or below.🔺

With the potential for snow on Saturday, 1/31/26, kids of all ages will want to play in it! However, it will be accompanied by gusty winds and extremely cold temperatures. Being out too long in these conditions can lead to hypothermia or frostbite. Staying indoors is recommended, but if you must be outside, wear layers, cover exposed skin, and limit your time outdoors. And bring pets indoors!

Please make sure vulnerable populations are prepared for the freezing temperatures this weekend. Ensure neighbors, family, and friends have safe heating options in the event of a power outage.

Travel on the roadways is not advised due to the Winter Storm Watch that could impact our area on Saturday. However, if you are traveling at any time during extremely cold temperatures, make sure your car is topped off with gas, antifreeze, and fluids and you're properly prepared in the event of car trouble: blankets, food, water, flashlight, and charged communication devices.

Continue to follow your local trusted weather sources for weather updates.
