Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky (HONK)

Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky (HONK) Changing Lives and Strengthening Neighborhoods since 1991.

Using volunteer labor, donations and subcontracted services, HONK builds new houses and rehabilitates older houses for homeownership opportunities among lower income working families. Client-family support staff provide homeownership counseling to facilitate successful and sustainable ownership.

We know many people have questions about our pathway to homeownership. Credit scores, debt-to-income ratios, and credit building are all part of the conversation at HONK. We ask the hard questions, but we also provide individualized support and guidance every step of the way through our housing counselor, Gina.

Our program has requirements, but the most important one is a willingness and strong desire to become a homeowner. When that goal is clear, the hard questions take on meaning and purpose—they become stepping stones on the journey home.

It starts with gathering information and asking questions. Then comes the work: creating a budget, defining the next steps, chipping away at debt, and building credit over time. It’s a process, but it’s all for a purpose—owning a home and creating a legacy of stability, opportunity, and wealth for generations to come.

✊Juneteenth 💚💛♥️marks June 19, 1865 - the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas, years after the Emancipation Proclamation. At Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky (HONK), we honor that legacy by continuing the work of freedom today by helping families build stability and generational change through affordable homeownership in Northern Kentucky. 💛💚♥️

We love seeing the younger generations learning important skills!

🏡 One of the things that makes HONK different?
Before purchasing their home, households live in it for up to a year through our lease-to-own program.
That means they have time to learn the rhythms of their home before taking on a mortgage.
✨ Along the way, they learn:
• How to change HVAC filters
• Seasonal home maintenance, yard maintenance and weather prep
• Basic pest prevention
• How to spot small issues before they become costly repairs
• The everyday skills that turn a house into a well-cared-for home
And they’re not figuring it out alone.
🔨 Jeremy, our Construction Manager, is a trusted resource for home maintenance questions and guidance.
🤝 Gina, our Housing Counselor, helps families build confidence in all aspects of homeownership, from budgeting and credit to the practical realities of caring for a home.
Because sustainable homeownership isn’t just about getting the keys, it’s about having the knowledge, support, and confidence to build a home. ❤️

We love sharing these homeowner stories with you during this month of June as we celebrate homeowners NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP month! We spent a few moments hanging out with Carla and family and she shared a tour of her HONK home. Her story is inspiring and when she learned about HONK and our homeownership model, she jumped at the opportunity to apply. She connected with Gina immediately, and they began on working on Carla’s credit together. She went to financial counseling classes that HONK set up, as well as classes through Catholic Charities and eventually met all of the requirements of the program to qualify for a great mortgage with through their credit builder loan product. While each client qualifies for different loan products, down payments are also a key factor for securing a great a mortgage - Carla was lucky enough to receive through the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB). Carla has lived in her home since she started her lease in the fall of 2025. She looks forward to planning garden beds out front and enjoying the summer in her OWN HOME!

Think buying a home is out of reach? Think again. 🏡
In this video, our Housing Counselor Gina is walking through one of HONK’s available homes in Covington and sharing how our lease-to-own program helps families become successful homeowners.
One of the biggest myths we hear:
❌ “I could never qualify for a mortgage.”
❌ “I don’t have enough money for a down payment.”
The truth? Real HONK clients have worked with local lenders, improved their financial readiness, accessed down payment assistance programs, and become homeowners. We’ve seen it happen again and again. ❤️
Through HONK’s program, you’ll receive:
• Homeownership education classes
• Budget and credit coaching
• Access to local mortgage lenders who meet with our participants
• Guidance on available down payment assistance opportunities
• A lease-to-own pathway designed to prepare you for long-term success
Many Northern Kentucky homebuyers may qualify for programs such as consortium down payment assistance funds, Welcome Home grants, and other resources available through participating lenders. Our team helps you understand what options may be available.
At HONK, we don’t just help people find a house, we help them build a path to homeownership through education, support, and opportunity. HONK participants receive homeownership education, financial coaching, credit counseling, and mortgage guidance while preparing to purchase their home.

A ramp was built at a HONK home in Covington! Shout outs to two of the construction team and one of our volunteers. This solid structure will support a resident and bring more mobility and agency to the household. We love adding inclusive support structures to our homes and enjoy watching them take shape over a couple days.

Our Volunteers have been well-fed and much appreciated at the Volunteer Lunches. Today marked our last one for the season. We appreciate the hard work and dedication; and we have enjoyed the stories and experiences.
