🌾 Did you know Louisiana is home to one of North America's rarest ecosystems?
The Cajun prairie once covered more than 2.5 million acres across southwestern Louisiana, creating a vast landscape of native grasses and wildflowers that supported incredible biodiversity. Today, less than one percent of this ecosystem remains, making it one of the most endangered habitats in the United States.
The Cajun prairie (AKA coastal prairie) provides essential benefits. Its deep-rooted native plants help improve soil health, absorb floodwaters, support pollinators, and provide habitat for countless species of birds, insects, and other wildlife. During peak bloom, these prairies burst into color with native wildflowers that have evolved alongside Louisiana's unique landscapes for thousands of years.
Protecting and restoring the Cajun prairie takes collaboration. Organizations such as the Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society, the Acadiana Native Plant Project and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working alongside landowners, researchers, and conservation partners to preserve what remains of this extraordinary ecosystem and restore prairie habitats for future generations.
The Cajun prairie is a reminder that some of Louisiana's greatest natural treasures are also its most vulnerable. By learning about and supporting prairie conservation, we can help ensure this remarkable ecosystem continues to thrive.
