Land Trust for Louisiana

Land Trust for Louisiana Land Trust for Louisiana works to protect our state’s irreplaceable lands and waters using tools like conservation easements.

In operation since 2005, we currently have almost 15,000 acres in conservation all over Louisiana. Established October 7, 2004, the Land Trust for Southeast Louisiana (LTSL) began as a grassroots organization with a mission to protect the state's natural resources. After a decade of success and growth in scope, the organization changed its name to reflect its wider mission. The Land Trust for Loui

siana (LTL) is an accredited 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works with community partners to create a sustainable natural environment through land donations, conservation easements, or purchases. We've established many types of partnerships to preserve sensitive natural areas, farmland, ranch lands, urban communities, water sources, cultural resources, and notable landmarks - in perpetuity. In the summer 2014, LTL launched its Urban Lands Initiative, a program focused on preserving open green spaces in urban environments to promote community identity and improve storm water management. As a local organization, LTL satisfies a niche that larger national organizations cannot meet. Larger land trusts cannot always capitalize on smaller land preservation opportunities. Thanks to its grassroots origins and strong local ties, LTL is well-equipped to protect these smaller, yet equally important, natural resources. We regularly conduct community outreach and education so that citizens can be aware of the benefits that come with land preservation.

🌾 Did you know Louisiana is home to one of North America's rarest ecosystems?

The Cajun prairie once covered more than 2.5 million acres across southwestern Louisiana, creating a vast landscape of native grasses and wildflowers that supported incredible biodiversity. Today, less than one percent of this ecosystem remains, making it one of the most endangered habitats in the United States.

The Cajun prairie (AKA coastal prairie) provides essential benefits. Its deep-rooted native plants help improve soil health, absorb floodwaters, support pollinators, and provide habitat for countless species of birds, insects, and other wildlife. During peak bloom, these prairies burst into color with native wildflowers that have evolved alongside Louisiana's unique landscapes for thousands of years.

Protecting and restoring the Cajun prairie takes collaboration. Organizations such as the Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society, the Acadiana Native Plant Project and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working alongside landowners, researchers, and conservation partners to preserve what remains of this extraordinary ecosystem and restore prairie habitats for future generations.

The Cajun prairie is a reminder that some of Louisiana's greatest natural treasures are also its most vulnerable. By learning about and supporting prairie conservation, we can help ensure this remarkable ecosystem continues to thrive.

💚 Like and share this post to help spread the word about the amazing Cajun prairie and inspire others to protect one of Louisiana's most unique natural landscapes!

What exactly is a conservation easement?

THE GIST: A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement that helps protect land from development that destroys its natural value, while allowing landowners to retain ownership of their property. It’s one of the most effective tools for conserving Louisiana’s natural landscapes for future generations.

Here at Land Trust for Louisiana, we work with landowners to steward conservation easements that help preserve important forests, farms, wetlands, wildlife habitat, and other irreplaceable lands across our state.

We recently shared a blog explaining how conservation easements work, why they matter, and how they can benefit both land and landowners—you can read more on our website!

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

Legacy giving is one of the most meaningful ways to support the long-term protection of Louisiana’s lands, waters, wildlife, and working landscapes. By including Land Trust for Louisiana in your estate plans, you can help ensure these special places are protected for generations to come.

We recently shared more about what legacy giving can look like, why it matters, and how it can make a lasting impact on our blog... we'd love for you to check it out!

It's the perfect day to shout out an organization that we love — Summergrove Farms in Folsom!

This special place, home to the New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center and the New Orleans Polo Club, has supported Land Trust for Louisiana for many years through events like the Justin Addison Memorial Conservation Cup, and Yoga in the Sunflowers. We love their heart for community, horses, the natural world, and helping people through life-changing therapies — and we're so proud to have them as Northshore neighbors!

Thank you, Summergrove Farms, for supporting conservation, community, and meaningful connections to the land. 🌿
