We had a wonderful time at NKY this weekend! Great work as always from the NKY Pride Center - make sure you’re following them, and give them the love they deserve.

We are sorry that we didn’t get any photos of our own from Juneteenth in Elsmere, but we want to say thank you to the NKY Juneteenth Committee for having us there! We will back with y’all on the 20th at Covington Landing.

Our neighbors continue to ask questions about the treatment of people held in detention, and Boone County is Better has done a great job of raising concerns about the expanded collaboration we are seeing across the region with ICE.

Too often many decision makers look at the fiscal impact of policies, without considering the human impact. Many folks are especially concerned about looking at how we use our police and jails, and what the implications of using profit motivation for policies have for our neighbors.

Eight Kentucky county jails were holding 1,100 immigrants on behalf of the federal Department of Homeland Security and ICE.

Today, the League of Women Voters of Kentucky released Immigration Detention in Kentucky Jails: Who’s in Charge and What to Ask Them. The report is a guide to help the public understand who makes decisions about their county jails, and suggest questions to not only learn about the conditions for immigrants and other detainees in the jails, but to shine light on a system that could potentially obscure Constitutional violations, such as due process.

The report is the second in a series of reports that the League will issue over the next several months to bring transparency and accountability to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detentions in Kentucky county jails.
