SCFRA mourns with our brothers and sisters at Franklin Fire & Rescue with the passing of Deputy Chief Mark Carr (Ret.) earlier today. Chief Carr’s commitment and devotion to the fire service was vast. His leadership was filled with passion and wisdom. Chief, you will be missed more than any words can express.

Franklin Fire & Rescue mourns the passing of former Deputy Chief Mark W. Carr.

Chief Carr devoted years of dedicated service to the fire service and to the City of Franklin. Throughout his career, he demonstrated leadership, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the men and women he served alongside and the community he was entrusted to protect.

His contributions to this department and to the fire service will not be forgotten. The legacy he leaves behind is reflected in the lives he influenced, the firefighters he mentored, and the continued service of those who follow in his footsteps.

Our deepest condolences are extended to Chief Carr’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the honor of knowing and serving with him.

Today, we honor his service. We remember his leadership. We carry forward his legacy.

Rest in peace, Chief Carr. Your watch is ended, but your service and memory will remain a lasting part of the Franklin Fire & Rescue family.

SCFRA extends its deepest sympathy to the family and members of Franklin Fire and Rescue, as well as the members of Station 9 Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department on the passing of Captain Jerry Beaton (Ret.). Jerry was a long time career member of Franklin Fire and Rescue and also became a member of Newsoms VFD upon moving to that community after retirement. The number of lives impacted by Capt. Beaton over the years through his role as a fire service instructor, or as a seasoned brother offering a piece of invaluable advice, can never be measured. Rest easy Captain, it was truly an honor.

Please join the SCFRA in extending our most heartfelt sympathies to the members of Drewryville Volunteer Fire Department and the Flowers family on the loss of Fireman James Flowers. Not only did James serve as a founding member of DVFD, but was also a Southampton County LEGEND for the famous hotdogs and “Flowers Special” sandwiches he served from his store for decades. James will be deeply missed by all.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Charter/Life Member James Flowers. James was involved in the beginning of our department around 1965 and was one of the original members when the department was chartered in 1967. James faithfully served the department until 1987, around the same time he took over Flowers Exxon in Courtland. James operated this store for many years, selling his world famous (at least everyone local thinks) hotdogs. James was a familiar face to our community, still coming by the station to show his support, attending each fundraiser the department did, as well as attending our annual awards banquet since its inception.

James was awarded life membership in 2026 as the 6th person to receive the honor, which he admired and appreciated greatly. At that time he was one of two of the last living charter members of the department.

Over the next week, you will see this engine placed outside the station each morning in remembrance of our faithful and dedicated friend.

The department sends our most heartfelt condolences to the Flowers family. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you, you have forever been and forever will be part of this department.

To James, as you have done for the past 59 years of this department, keep a watch over us, keep us safe. We will forever remember your dedication and support.

Congratulations to Station 6 getting their new E-One engine in service. Engine 64 didn’t sit in her bay very long before she answered her first call. Well done IVFD, a great job enhancing your abilities to serve the Ivor community and surrounding mutual aid departments.

Congratulations Station 9 on placing the new Eng 91 in service. All County stations are looking forward to having this great piece of apparatus available to serve our citizens.

As of 4:15PM today (7/2/26), the new Engine 91 is in service serving the community! Thank you to all our members and other community members who worked to get everything ready for this day. There is still one more surprise coming with the new truck for everyone to see but that will come later.😉

I just could not let this milestone pass by and not share it here. Hunterdale Volunteer Fire Department established the second junior Fire Department program in Southampton County, behind the model built by Ivor Volunteer Fire Department a couple years earlier. The concept caught on quickly county wide due to its overwhelming investment in the future of the departments, all County fire departments had junior departments in the next few years thanks to an outstanding model program. Gene Drewery, Southampton County Fire & Rescue Association will be forever grateful for your perseverance and passion to institute a program that deeply impacted every one of our fire departments in a significant way. Thank you just does not seem like enough. Well done Chief.
