Citizens of the Ebey's Reserve COER’s mission is to defend the health and wellbeing of Salish Sea communities, both human and
animal, that are under threat from Navy jet warfare training.

This page is primarily used to provide information about the mission of the Citizens of the Ebey's Reserve, and some discussion so long as the dialogue remains respectful and thoughtful. Any comments that insult other persons, threaten, attempt to incite and escalate conflict, do not contribute in any meaningful way to the discussion, are just plain rude and disruptive, etc. will be removed. In such cases, some comments may be removed that simply responded to a removed comment, in order to maintain logical flow of the discussion. If a post is whining about our comment rules and enforcement, that post will be removed because we aren't going to waste our time with that nonsense. Some of the loudest jets in the world, Navy EA-18 Growler jets fly over the homes and communities of Washington residents, including the local birds.

Growler “mishaps” reported by Navy pilots include, “large flock of birds hit after takeoff", “bird strike shut down engine", “bird ingested sometime after flight", and, “encountered bird flock that FODed (foreign object damage) both engines".

In other words, the Navy considers a bird a foreign object. We consider jet planes to be the foreign objects!

All are impacted by the current Growler training program. Growler training doesn't belong in residential and protected areas!

Marbled Murrelets are designated as threatened by the federal government and as endangered in Washington, Oregon and California.

These birds rely on not only Washington State's coastal habitats, but our old growth forests are crucial nesting sites for them. With only around 21,200 marbled murrelets left in our region.

The Navy trains some of the loudest jets in the world, the EA-18G Growler jets, directly in their migratory flight path and over forests they depend on such as the coastal forests in Olympic National Park.

The Navy is allowed a certain amount of "takes" each year. "Takes" is their term for any harassment, capturing, or killing of animals species.

In January, Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve (COER) filed a complaint in federal court that argues the Navy’s Growlers, based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, are jeopardizing the existence of the marbled murrelets. We are calling on the judge to prohibit the "taking" of the marbled murrelets until the Navy has a lawful incidental “take statement”. As well as, ordering Washington's Fish and Wildlife to prepare a biological opinion that takes new information into account.

Now more than ever it is important that we speak up for those whose calls cannot be heard under the jets!

The Navy not only impacts 74,000+ Washingtonians with EA-18G Growler jet training operations, but they put their own pilots at risk of accidents by training on a runaway that does not even meet the Navy's own safety standards.

The Naval Outlying Field (OLF) in Coupeville, WA is currently a training location for some of the loudest jets in the world. But this 5,400-foot strip, built prior to 1943 to accommodate aircraft built in the 1940s, is nearly 3,500 feet too short for Growler jet “touch and go” operations, which require 8,800 feet. The runway cannot be extended.

Our pilots should have the best possible training, and the Navy should provide a training site that provides realistic carrier landing and takeoff conditions in a way that does not needlessly endanger pilots or civilians.

The Coupeville Schools Board has given an updated after the Facilities Planning Task Force meeting last week!

Read the full response here: https://app.smore.com/n/q30my-the-wolfpack-family-community-news?ref=email

The Coupeville Schools Board has decided to slow down the process of the relocation of the Coupeville Elementary School to address the following concerns raised by the community:

- Safety and security for students and staff, including challenges we know exist at the current site and must be solved in any new school
- Traffic flow and safe access for families, buses, and the surrounding neighborhood
- Protecting the active eagle nest and the natural setting around our school
- Clear, consistent communication with our community throughout the process
- Involving the Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve early in planning
- Being responsible with the cost to taxpayers
- A thoughtful and transparent site selection process

Thank you to the Coupeville School Board for taking our concerns into consideration and listening to the community!

Thanks to YOU speaking up we were able to make our voices heard and our concerns about the community being safeguarded from Growler jet noise pollution considered in this important decision.

Thank YOU for stepping up and taking action!

To note: This week both carrier operations have been listed as none on the Navy's official website. We list this as unknown on our posting of their schedule due to the Navy having flown Growlers outside of their scheduled windows and locations in the past.

Comments, including noise complaints can be directed to NAS Whidbey Island’s comment line at (360) 257-6665 or written in an email to [email protected]. Comments regarding flight operations should note the time an event occurred, where exactly the event occurred and as much detail as possible about what was seen. We also ask that people leave their contact information for our tracking purposes. All other questions can be directed to NAS Whidbey Island Public Affairs Office at (360) 257-2286.
