We do this by learning to reduce, re-use, and recycle our garbage, and composting as much yard waste as possible, returning the nutrients to the soil. Waste Wise was formed in 1992 and originally called Waste Warriors. It is a program administered by Washington State University Extension for Island County. In its 29 years of operation, the program has educated many community members and trained many dedicated and talented volunteers from a rich variety of backgrounds. They include airline pilots, medical doctors, students, retirees, construction workers, chemists and caterers. What does Waste Wise teach:
The Climate and Waste Connection

We shouldn’t have to shoulder the responsibility of solving the plastics crisis when the industry urgently needs to change. But we can still make lifestyle changes to reduce our exposure to harmful microplastics. No one wants micromonsters swimming in their stomach. Switch to a glass or metal reusable bottle if you haven’t already, and learn more tips at stopmicromonsters.org.

This year's annual Plastic Plant Pot Exchange was a HUGE SUCCESS! Thank you to the many Waste Wise volunteers who make this event possible! Scott, Dale, Wendi, Dan, Stacy, Teri, Helen, Jerry, Jill, Elaine - grateful for all of you!

Also extending a big thank you to the hundreds of folks who brought in their pots for re-use. We saved THOUSANDS of plastic plant pots from the landfill!

Leftover pots (that were not claimed by community members at the event) went to our friends at Puget Sound Public Farms so that they can grow more food for our Stanwood Camano Food Bank!

Next, we'll be organizing a plant pot sorting/organizing event at the Puget Sound Public Farms community farm in Stanwood if anyone wants to join us! As always, all are welcome!

Yesterday our Waste Wise Training had a behind-the-scenes tour of the Stanwood Camano Food Bank & Thrift Store and it was awesome!

Have you shopped at this fantastic store lately? With tons of fabulous treasures to be found you never know what you might find here priced at 50% or more below retail value (if high-value brand names) and bargain prices on most other items.

By donating your un-needed and unused items you are giving these items a chance of continued use which decreases items sent to the landfill. Please be sure to only donated things in good working condition. The thrift store already spends about $1,000 a month on throwing away donated items that are really just trash. If you have a question about an item that you're not sure about - just ask!

Thrift Store We take great pride in serving our community by offering affordable, quality items at generous discounts for customers to take home and enjoy! Our Thrift Store helps support the Food Bank through the sale of gently used items donated by community members, local businesses, and...
