Happy Fathers' day! Here's a photo of Carl & Jessie Pearson with their daughter Merrill. On the back of the picture is a note in fading ink: "My dear Mrs. Race, Here is our family group. Any one would think Carl and I had no eyes for anything or anyone but Merrill.... Love to all - Jessie M." Carl's father Daniel Pearson owned the Haller House property and also a store in Coupeville. Here's to all loving fathers!

Today is Juneteenth, and we remember those who suffered under slavery. Juneteenth commemorates the day that the last enslaved people learned that they were free. Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865: more than 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day is an opportunity for people to celebrate freedom and equal rights in the United States.

This flag day, we remember what our flag stands for: liberty and justice for all. This picture is from a newspaper article in 1976. It shows the traditional flag-raising ceremony at NAS Whidbey Island done by Sgt. Austin Case. Case raised the flag at the station's commissioning on Sept. 21, 1942, and joined in the 34th birthday celebration by raising the flag again at the original site.
