What is a healthy stream?
HEALTHY
- Stable Banks: plants growing to water edge
- Narrow Channel
- Diverse Plants: slows water & soil movement
- Deep Water: low temperatures, high oxygen
- High Water Table: stream banks overflow easily
- Natural Substrate: pools present, rocks provide fish habitat
UNHEALTHY
- Incised Channel: water can’t reach stream-bank plants
- Wide Channel
- Eroded & Exposed Banks: unwanted nutrients, sediments, & pathogens flow into water
- Shallow Water: high temperature, low oxygen
- Low Water Table
- High Turbidity: murky water carries sediment, bacteria, viruses & pathogens
- Fine Sediment: fills stream pools, covers rocky fish habitat
Carefully manage livestock access
Keep banks well vegetated
Remove cedars and other invasives
