Southwest Iowa Educational Foundation, Inc. (SWIEF) is a 501(c)3 centered around scholarships.
For nearly four decades, the grassroots organization comprised of unpaid volunteers has stood behind its mission: to provide the opportunity for interested students to pursue post-secondary education. In short, we solicit scholarships, award scholarships, and manage scholarships that make college possible.
Founding member Frank Pechacek recalls SWIEFโs humble beginnings when it granted just a few, small scholarships per year. In 2020, SWIEF awarded more than $180,000 in scholarships to 100+ high school seniors. Not only do these scholarships offer the financial boost students need to make a degree, credential, or certificate accessible, but they also create a sense of commitment to fulfilling a dream for many first-generation students. Knowing that the scholarship committee -by way of donors who made awards possible- believed these students worthy of scholarship recognition is often just the incentivization they need to make the first domino fall in the pursuit of college.
By serving as the central application hub for so many scholarships, our organization is also able to offer our donors an outlet for good. Many of our scholarships are in memory of a loved one. Our annual recognition event allows families to connect a tragedy or loss with something positive as they see an individualโs life change for the better when they accept their scholarship.
SWIEF firmly believes higher education can change the trajectory of a young personโs life, whether through an improved occupation, higher income, the ability to appreciate and enjoy arts and culture, or perhaps most importantly how the likelihood of higher education increases for subsequent generations. One small scholarship can make a big difference. That is why our organization has put 100 percent of the donations it receives toward scholarship funds, while the board of directors pays any out of pocket costs. Over the years, this has resulted in the ability to fund millions of dollars to thousands of students.
Just thinking of the positive ripple from one scholarship drives the board to want to offer more. For it was Horace Mann who said it best: โEducation then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer.โ We seek to be the bridge to that equalizer in all that we do.
