Vera Kio, Backpack Blessings GCM founder, had a dream about opening a food pantry. She wasn't sure what it meant, or how to go about it, but the feeling wouldn't go away that she needed to start a food pantry. Vera's late mother Faye showed her love by feeding people, and Vera decided to continue the tradition in her honor. Thus, Backpack Blessings was born. Vera partnered with God's Country Minis
tries and is operating out of their facility. Each week, she fills backpacks with 2 lunches, 2 breakfasts, drinks, and snacks for students to take home with them over the weekend. The backpacks are filled with easy to make items like instant oatmeal, Poptarts, meat and cheese sticks, and Ramen noodles.
1 in 5 children in PA suffer from hunger and live in food-insecure homes. More students than not go hungry on weekends and days off from school.
