First Spanish Services in West Texas held at Redeemer, Eagle Pass - 1945
from the Church News 1945-12; pg. 14
“The first of a series of services entirely in Spanish, was held in the Church of the Redeemer, Eagle Pass, September 30, with an attendance of about forty Anglo-Americans and perhaps thirty Latin Americans. The services were conducted by the Rector, the Rev. W.T. Sherwood, who also delivered the sermon in Spanish. The choir led the congregation in singing the Spanish versions of “Onward Christian Soldiers”, “Fling Out the Banner” and “Holy, Holy, Holy”, as well as the Gloria Patri. The entire choir has practiced until letter perfect. An offertory solo was beautifully sung in the Spanish language by Mrs. Frances Gates Dorsett. This is not only the first service in Spanish to be held in the Church of the Redeemer, but is very likely the first complete service in Spanish language ever to be given in the Diocese of West Texas."
