Summer Heat Safety

Summer in Arizona can be challenging for anyone, but it can be especially dangerous for older adults.

As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature. Many seniors do not feel thirst as strongly as they once did, making dehydration more likely. Certain medical conditions and medications can also affect the body’s ability to stay cool and respond to heat.

Unfortunately, heat-related illness can develop quickly and become serious before a person realizes there is a problem.

Warning signs may include:

• Excessive thirst
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Fatigue or weakness
• Headache
• Nausea
• Muscle cramps
• Confusion or unusual behavior
• Rapid heartbeat

There are several simple steps seniors can take to stay safe during periods of extreme heat:

• Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.
• Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.
• Use air conditioning whenever possible.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak temperatures.
• Check with your healthcare provider if you take medications that may increase sensitivity to heat.

Family members, friends, and neighbors can also play an important role. A simple phone call or visit can help ensure an older adult is safe, comfortable, and staying hydrated during periods of extreme heat.

At AZ Senior Cares Foundation, we know that small challenges can quickly become larger problems for vulnerable seniors. Taking a few simple precautions during the summer months can help prevent a medical emergency and keep older adults safe and healthy.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and check on your neighbors.

AZ Senior Cares Foundation provides short-term financial assistance to vulnerable seniors in the Verde Valley facing medically necessary needs during times of crisis when other options are unavailable.

Most of us never imagine needing help.

Yet every day, local seniors face situations they never expected. A sudden medical crisis. The need for care, equipment, transportation, or safe housing when resources are delayed or unavailable.

When you link your Fry’s Rewards Card to AZ Senior Cares Foundation, Fry’s donates based on your purchases. It costs you nothing.

But it helps ensure that when a senior’s world becomes uncertain, help is available.

A few minutes to enroll can help provide stability, dignity, and hope to someone facing one of the most difficult times in their life.

Check On Your Neighbor

Most of us assume that if someone needs help, they will ask for it.

The reality is often very different.

Many older adults value their independence and do not want to be a burden to anyone. Even when they are struggling, they may say they are “fine” when they are anything but. Pride, privacy, fear, or simply not wanting to inconvenience others can keep people from reaching out.

That is why a simple phone call, text message, or visit can matter more than we realize.

A few minutes of conversation may reveal that a neighbor has not been feeling well, is having difficulty getting to medical appointments, is struggling to keep up with household tasks, or is feeling isolated and alone. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is not a solution. It is simply letting someone know they have not been forgotten.

In our busy lives, it is easy to assume that someone else is checking in. A family member. A friend. A church member. A neighbor.

Sometimes there is no one.

As we age, our circles often become smaller. Friends move away. Loved ones pass on. Health challenges can make it difficult to get out and stay connected. What begins as a temporary setback can gradually become isolation.

A simple act of kindness can interrupt that cycle.

Call the neighbor you have not seen in a while.

Knock on the door of the older adult down the street.

Invite someone to coffee.

Take a few minutes to listen.

You may never fully understand the impact of that small gesture. What feels routine to you may mean the world to someone else.

At AZ Senior Cares Foundation, we often meet seniors during some of life’s most difficult circumstances. One thing I have learned is that people do not always need grand gestures. Often, they simply need to know someone cares enough to notice.

The next time someone comes to mind, consider that thought an invitation.

Make the call.

Stop by.

Check on your neighbor.

You might be exactly who they needed that day.

Arizona summers can quickly become dangerous for older adults.

As we age, our bodies become less effective at regulating temperature. Certain medical conditions, medications, and living alone can further increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Please take a few moments to check on the seniors in your life, especially during periods of extreme heat.

Make sure they have:
☀️ A cool environment with working air conditioning or adequate cooling
💧 Plenty of fluids, even if they don’t feel thirsty
🏠 Food, medications, and essential supplies to avoid unnecessary trips outside
📞 Someone they can call if they need help

Know the warning signs of heat-related illness:
• Confusion or changes in mental status
• Dizziness or fainting
• Extreme weakness or fatigue
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rapid heartbeat
• Excessive sweating or hot, dry skin
• Loss of consciousness

If you suspect someone is experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and delaying treatment can be fatal.

A simple phone call, text message, or knock on the door may seem like a small act of kindness, but it could save a life.

Please share this reminder. Together, we can help keep older adults in our community safe this summer.

One of the hardest parts of having aging parents is that there is rarely a moment when someone tells you, “It’s time. They can’t live alone anymore.”

Instead, you find yourself wondering…

Am I overreacting?

Am I seeing normal aging, or something more?

Would Dad be angry if I brought this up?

What if I’m wrong?

What if I wait too long?

Most families aren’t trying to decide whether a parent can live alone today. They’re trying to understand what happens if something changes tomorrow.

Maybe Mom has started missing bill payments after always being meticulous with finances. Dad has had two minor falls in the past six months but insists he’s fine. You notice expired food in the refrigerator, unopened mail piling up, or increasing difficulty keeping track of medications. Individually, these moments may seem explainable. Together, they can signal that more support may be needed.

Realizing a parent may need additional support can bring up a mix of emotions, including worry, guilt, uncertainty, and even relief at finally acknowledging what you’ve been noticing. It’s about making sure they have the help they need and that everyone feels confident about the plan moving forward. It’s about finding ways to help them stay safe and supported while honoring their preferences and preserving as much independence as possible.

These conversations are difficult because they come from love. And sometimes, love means planning before a crisis forces the decision for you.
