Funny thing happened at the forum tonight:

Anyone at the town meeting about trail access tonight heard a speech at the end talking about "the object of good governance" as being "to create a more perfect union" and not to protect land ownership rights.

Honestly, to say I was taken aback would be an understatement. Let me be clear; I consider the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution to be inspired (and inspiring) documents. However I am also aware that the people who wrote them both were most familiar with English common law - which had it's genesis with the Magna Carta. Thus it is also the basis of law in these United States, in the state of Utah, and even in Cottonwood Heights.

The Magna Carta, if you remember, was when the land owners in England at that time sat the King down (King John iirc) and told him - YOU ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW. YOU CANNOT KEEP STEALING OUR LAND FOR YOUR OWN PURPOSES!

I guess we are all entitled to our own opinion on what actually constitutes 'good governance' but a key point (in my opinion) is that no one (be it king, president, or governmental entity) is above the law. You can't have a more perfect union if you ignore (even selectively) established law, the 5th and 14th amendments (due process), and individual and property rights.

Head here to take a survey on what YOU would like to see happen at Hillside Plaza (Dollar Tree/SushiYa/old Reams and Rite Aid). Seems there is group pushing to eliminate or severely limit parking at the site. If that's your thing, then comment. If you'd rather be able to drive, park, and be there, LET the committee know.
