Addiction is Real, Inc. That’s why it is so important that parents build a strong relationship with their kids and talk to them early and often about substance use. No one is immune.

THERE IS POWER IN BEING A PARENT

Research shows that the main reason why kids choose not to use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs is because of their PARENTS – because of their positive influence and because they know it would disappoint them. We’re here to help you have those conversations. To help lay a strong foundation for your kids so that they can stand on their own two feet and withstand the pressures of drug use. We’re all in this together.

When engagement with learning fades, it may be time to check in.❤️

A teen’s space can sometimes reflect changes in their connection to school and learning:

📅 No planner, calendar, or visible assignments
📚 Few signs of books or learning materials being used
🖥️ A study space that has become unused or nonfunctional
📄 An absence of school projects or work they once took pride in

This isn’t about straight A’s, a perfectly organized desk, or one missing homework assignment. Look for changes in patterns. A noticeable loss of interest, motivation, or participation may signal that your teen is struggling or feeling disconnected.

Start with curiosity, not criticism. Ask what’s making school difficult. Listen. Help them identify small steps toward feeling engaged again.

Disengagement with learning can signal a loss of direction. Connection and support can help them find their way forward.

Prosocial values can be powerful protective factors. 💚

A teen’s room may reveal signs that they feel connected to something bigger than themselves:

🤝 Volunteer or service-related shirts, awards, or keepsakes
🙏 Faith-based materials, when personally meaningful to them
🌎 Items connected to community involvement or causes they care about
💙 Fundraising or service-event memorabilia
🏅 Reminders of the ways they’ve contributed, helped, or made a difference

Giving young people opportunities to help others, contribute to their community, and live out their values can strengthen their sense of purpose and belonging.

It’s not about what cause they support or how they serve. It’s about helping them discover that they have something meaningful to contribute.

Service and contribution create meaning — and meaning can reduce risk.

When interests disappear, it may be worth checking in. ❤️

A teen’s room can sometimes show signs of disengagement from activities, hobbies, and goals that once gave them purpose:

⚽ Sports equipment, instruments, or hobby materials that are no longer being used
🎨 Abandoned projects or interests they once enjoyed
🎯 Little evidence of participation, skill-building, or activities they’re working toward
📱 A noticeable shift toward excessive passive screen time

One unused guitar or a few weeks away from a sport isn’t necessarily a red flag. But significant changes in motivation, interests, or participation—especially when combined with other changes—deserve attention.

Ask what changed. Listen without judgment. Look for opportunities to help them reconnect with something that gives them purpose and a sense of progress.

A lack of forward movement can signal disengagement. Connection can help restart it.

Today, Team Addiction is Real, Inc. supported the Out of the Darkness walk at Creve Couer Park - for the people we love, for those we miss, and for everyone who may be struggling in silence.

We’ll keep showing up, starting conversations, reaching out, and STAYING; until we figure out how to prevent su***de and addiction, and make sure no one has to face their hardest moments alone. 💙❤️

Inspiring event, American Foundation for Su***de Prevention - Missouri Chapter!

Thanks to our tiniest volunteer, James, for bringing a cold treat to his girls ❤️

💙💛🤍 Walk with us. Remember. Support. Bring hope.

Join Addiction is Real, Inc. this Sunday for the Out of the Darkness St. Louis Walk as we come together to support those affected by su***de and help build a future where more lives are saved.

Su***de is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. Prevention starts with understanding, open conversations, connection, and access to support.

Funds raised through the Out of the Darkness Walks help support su***de prevention research, advocacy, and educational programs in schools, workplaces, and communities—including right here in Missouri.

👟 Register today and walk with us. Registration is free, quick, and an important way to stand with those who have lost loved ones, support those who are struggling, and bring hope to our community.

Together, we can help start conversations, reduce stigma, and remind people that they are not alone. 💙
