Second Chance Heroes

Second Chance Heroes Creating second chances every day.

Empowering those facing homelessness, aging out of foster care, or seeking direction through mentorship, resources, and purpose-driven paths — education, trades, entrepreneurship, leadership, and service. At Second Chance Heroes, our mission is to empower individuals experiencing homelessness by providing resources, mentorship, and a path to stability through enlistment in the United States milita

ry. We are equally committed to supporting young adults aging out of the foster care system—offering guidance, preparation, and encouragement as they pursue a future of purpose and opportunity through military service. Additionally, we actively assist homeless shelters, food banks, and the broader unhoused community in any way we can—because everyone deserves a second chance.

Second Chance Heroes Update

After a lot of thought and reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to pause the work of Second Chance Heroes effective at the end of January.

Over the past year, it’s become clear how challenging it is to secure sustainable funding and partnerships—especially for a nonprofit serving vulnerable populations through military-adjacent pathways. As we expanded our mission and pathways, the resources needed to truly help people change their lives became harder to secure at the level required to do this work the right way.

Rather than continue to spend the nonprofit’s funds on efforts that aren’t yet producing the impact we envisioned, I believe the responsible choice is to pause, reassess, and strategize. This time will be used to rethink our approach, strengthen our foundation, and pursue the partnerships necessary to carry this mission across the finish line.

I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has supported Second Chance Heroes, and I truly hope you’ll remain part of our community when we’re ready to resume.

This isn’t an ending—it’s a reset.

Today, we honor every Veteran who has raised their hand to serve—those who stood watch, carried a burden most will never see, and those still fighting battles long after coming home.

At Second Chance Heroes, we believe the uniform may come off, but the courage, discipline, and purpose never go away.

To every Veteran in our community — Thank you. We see you. We stand with you.

If you know a Veteran who is looking for purpose, connection, or a new path — we’re here.

Big news from Second Chance Heroes!

Our mission is growing — and so is our impact.

When we started, our goal was to guide young adults toward stability and purpose through military service. But along the way, we realized something important — that every path to success looks different.

So, we’ve expanded our mission to include five life-changing pathways:
🎓 Education
🔧 Skilled Trades
💡 Entrepreneurship
🤝 Community Leadership
🎖 Public or Military Service

By opening these new doors, we’ll be able to reach more people, build stronger partnerships, and help even more young adults turn second chances into success stories.

If you’re a veteran, a professional with real-world experience, or someone who’s overcome their own hardships — we invite you to join us as a mentor and change lives, one story at a time.

🖤 Because everyone deserves a second chance — and a community that believes in their potential.

🚀 Exciting News from Second Chance Heroes! 🚀

We’re proud to share that we were selected to be part of the UW–Wisconsin GROW Initiative, a program that helps nonprofits raise funds to expand their impact. This means we may have even more resources in the coming months to support those we serve.

Right now, we are still looking for:
🔹 Young adults aging out of foster care who want to explore their options, build a plan, and take steps toward enlisting in the military.
🔹 Individuals experiencing homelessness who want support getting back on track and working toward a stable future.
🔹 Veterans who would like to share their story in our short, four-part interview series, Veterans Unscripted — so others can see what military life is really like.

If you (or someone you know) falls into any of these categories — or if you’d like to help in another way — we’d love to hear from you. Together, we can create a world where everyone gets a second chance to be the hero in their own story.

✨ Today is National Charity Day ✨

At Second Chance Heroes, we believe charity is more than donations—it’s about showing up for those who need someone in their corner. Right now, we’re meeting with and connecting to anyone involved in the foster care system to make sure youth aging out know we are here, ready to mentor, ready to care, and ready to show them their options.

💬 No strings attached. No commitments. Just guidance, encouragement, and the chance to see new paths.

🎥 We’re about to launch our interview series—you’ll soon see us on TikTok and YouTube, sharing real stories that break stigmas and inspire hope.

🙏 Any support means the world—whether it’s:

A donation 💛

A connection to youth aging out of foster care 🤝

Helping us grow our audience 📣

Or connecting us with leadership and people working in foster care or human services so we can reach the youth who need us most 🌟

Every share, every comment, every small act helps us change lives.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at Second Chance Heroes 🎆

Today, we celebrate the spirit of freedom—the courage to fight for it, the strength to protect it, and the unity it inspires in all of us.

This day is a reminder of what makes our country unique: the belief that no matter where you start, you can forge a new path forward.

Let’s honor the sacrifices made by those who’ve served—and remember that freedom isn’t just a gift, it’s a responsibility we carry together.

Wishing you and your families a safe and meaningful Fourth of July.

🌱 Great meeting with the Canopy Center today!

I had the pleasure of meeting three incredible women from the Canopy Center, and I’m thrilled to share they’re helping us expand Second Chance Heroes across Wisconsin. Canopy Center is a trusted child abuse treatment and prevention nonprofit, offering programs like:

-CASA of Dane & Columbia Counties — volunteers who advocate for children in the foster care system, helping them have a consistent, caring adult and a voice in court
-Oasis Mental Health Clinic — providing specialized therapy for those affected by child sexual abuse
-Parent‑to‑Child supervised visitation, supporting safer family reunifications

If you’re aging out of foster care, feeling uncertain, or considering the military—but have questions—we’re here for a conversation. No commitment. Just a chance to explore what's possible with mentorship, transportation, and support every step of the way.

🎉 A HUGE thank you to the YMCA of Dane County – Sun Prairie location for donating a membership to support our mission!

The moment we welcome our first candidate into the Second Chance Heroes program, they’ll have full access to YMCA’s incredible facilities—giving them a space to train for military fitness requirements, stay active, and just have fun while getting in shape.

From swimming and strength training to team sports and community classes, this partnership gives our candidates more than just a gym—it gives them a foundation for transformation.

We’re proud to partner with such a community-focused organization. Thank you for believing in second chances. 💙🇺🇸

Yesterday, Madison came together at Forest Hill Cemetery for the 157th Memorial Day Ceremony, hosted by the Madison Veterans Council. The event featured patriotic music from the VFW Post 1318 Volunteer Band, heartfelt speeches, and a powerful rendition of the veteran version of Hallelujah.

For the third year in a row, Madden and I laid red, white, and blue bouquets on the graves of 50 veterans. This year was especially meaningful—Madden read each name aloud and asked about their branch, job, and which war they served in. It made me smile to see him treating each marker not just as a grave, but as a life worth remembering.

A special thank you to Klein’s Floral & Greenhouses for donating the artificial flowers and arranging the beautiful fresh flower bouquets. Your generosity helped us honor these heroes with dignity and care.

If you’d like to get involved next year—whether by volunteering, donating, or providing flowers—please reach out. We’d love to have you join us in honoring those who served.

Today isn’t about thanking all veterans — it’s about honoring those who never made it home.

Memorial Day is a reminder that freedom comes at a cost — paid in full by those who gave their lives in service to this country. It's not about sales, barbecues, or long weekends. It’s about remembering the brave men and women who sacrificed everything so we could live in peace.

This morning, Madden and I placed 50 bouquets of red, white, and blue flowers on veterans' graves. We’ll share more about that tomorrow — but tonight, we pause. We reflect. We remember.

This Memorial Day, We Remember.

On Monday, May 26th, Second Chance Heroes will join the Madison community at Forest Hill Cemetery to honor the brave men and women who served our country.

With the support of Klein’s Floral, we’ll be laying red, white, and blue bouquets at veterans’ graves as a small gesture of gratitude and remembrance. This tradition means a great deal to us—because at Second Chance Heroes, we believe that no one who served should ever be forgotten.

Whether you're attending a ceremony or simply reflecting at home, we invite you to take a moment this weekend to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes.
