This is Seun Adebiyi. In June 2009, Seun was diagnosed with two rare and aggressive blood cancers: stem cell leukemia and lymphoblastic lymphoma. His survival depended upon a stem cell transplant, but he was unable to find a matching bone marrow donor due to his African ancestry. Seun began advocating for cancer patients of minority descent and recruited over 10,000 donors. He also organized the first donor drive in Nigeria, and launched the first Bone Marrow Registry in Nigeria (and only the second in Africa). Seun eventually received a cord blood transplant and has been cancer free for over a decade. His commitment to signing up new donors has undoubtedly changed the outcomes for black patients around the world. In January 2019 the Nigerian Bone Marrow Registry, The Sunflower Fund, and The Moore Foundation formalized a partnership to extend donor recruitment and registry services into Ghana. We celebrate Seun, and these organizations for everything they do for black patients around the world! If you have time, Seun has an amazing TED MED talk called “Insights from an Athlete, Advocate, and Survivor”, as well as a documentary available on Amazon Prime called “More to Live For” ❤️
