Last year I had the honor of receiving the inaugural K.A.R.A. Award, for K-aring And Really Achieving and giving back to my community. This award continued to propel me to my next level of achievements in my life’s goals which are to create awareness, encourage involvement, and create a platform for kids in my community to be a part of making a difference. Now it’s time to celebrate our next recipient.
This process was long and very difficult. What I looked for was an individual that shared my goals and that this award would help propel them to the next level of their goals. I was able to meet so many inspiring and extraordinary nominees in our community. I have chosen our next KARA award recipient.
She is 17 years old, has a passion for dance, and shows unto her younger dancers that passion can lead to making a difference. Reminiscing on how one of her closests friends had to quit dancing because her mom was a single mother and couldn’t afford dance lessons anymore, she found a way to not only to help families who couldn’t afford dance but moreover she helped her studio form a foundation to do so.
What stood out to me when I heard about her is that not only was she overachieving and managing her schoolwork, ASB, multiple teaching assistant positions, tutoring her peers, and fundraising to provide dance lessons, but she formulated a “Dream Team” to continue on this legacy.
The biggest challenges are to be able to make a difference even if you are not there or have moved on. My hope for this award for her is that she knows that her efforts are being recognized and that the young dancers who come after her will still be inspired to continue her works.
She’s given them an opportunity to use their passion to make a difference in our community. Lastly, I also hope that she helps me find our next recipient next year too. Now I would like to welcome Leah Lederman, this year’s (or the 2024) recipient of the K.A.R.A. Award.
