Save TeWinkle Park

Save TeWinkle Park A consensus was reached, and the “TeWinkle Park Master Plan Report” was written. Unfortunately there is another “plan” for TeWinkle Park.

This Facebook homepage is dedicated to the discussion of the proposed “Privatization” of the Baseball complex, located in TeWinkle Park. ******** For more information goto: savetewinklepark.com ******** In 2003 - Costa Mesa citizens, Sports user groups, and City representatives formed a study group to express their individual needs, and develop a renovation plan for TeWinkle Park and athl

etic complex. In 2006 $3.5 million was spent on the renovation, based on the findings of the report. A “plan” inspired at City Hall for a “Showplace” facility. For some years this plan has been developed… waiting for the opportune time to be acted on. Costa Mesa’s current financial deficit, has open the door to this “plan”. Seizing the moment… Some members of the City Council have determined that they must “Privatize” the current baseball facility, to relieve the tax payers of it's, forty thousand dollars a year operating deficit. (38 cents a year, per CM resident)

Last May (2011), The then mayor, announced his intention to seek a private operator to “take over” the daily operations of the TeWinkle Baseball facility. The process has been “Fast-Tracked” at City Hall… A potential contractor has already been selected. Nowhere else in Costa Mesa, is a surrounding neighborhood burden by the immediate proximity of so many noise and traffic generating entities… an yet, the city is preparing to enter into a multi-decade agreement that “Could be the most popular sports attraction for amateur athletes on the west coast” according to the contractor. It is apparent that many Costa Mesa residents are not aware of the “Privatization” proposal… or it’s imminent impact to the citizens of Costa Mesa, residents of Mesa Del Mar, and patrons of TeWinkle Park. The “proposed” impacts may include:

* Alcohol sales.
* Charging admission for entrance.
* Expanding hours of operation.
* Extending days of operation up to 358 days a year.
* Expansion of the existing concession stand to 2500 square feet.
* Construction of a admissions/administration office at the Arlington entrance.
* Gating the entire facility, with access only via the Arlington entrance.
* The noise and traffic of 30-50 tournaments a year... almost all on weekends.
* Hollywood style facades imitating big league stadiums like Fenway Park in each of the existing fields.
* Increased attendance. The proposed contractor indicates the average attendance of their facilities is 350,000 to 400,000 a year. As indicated in the September 10, 2012 update… The “Privatization” proposal has been terminated… or has it?
Since 2003, one council member has pursued his own agenda regarding the development of the Baseball facility. This “agenda” was contrary to the public’s best interest, and contrary to the original study group findings prior to the park’s renovation in 2006. One would hope that the public’s wishes have finally been heard… Unfortunately, based on past history, that is probably not the case. Therefore, additional action is required to secure the park’s future. Please see the following link for details: http://www.garymonahan.com/ Please share this post !!!

Gary Monahan - What You Need To Know

09/11/2012

You can’t fight City Hall…Wrong ! As you may of heard, on August 21rst, the Costa Mesa City Council, voted to terminate all efforts to privatize the TeWinkle Park baseball complex. (See enclosed link: http://www.dailypilot.com/news/tn-dpt-0823-cmcouncil2-20120822,0,4481624.story)

Contrary to Mr. Righeimer’s pronouncements, this outcome was not the result of the Council’s studious review of the facts. In reality, the proposal’s demise was a political decision based on the council’s inability to conceal/explain the proposal’s many flaws and ever-increasing cost… prior to the elections.

It is a sad commentary on the state of affairs in Costa Mesa, that so much money and staff time has been wasted on such inept and meritless proposal… A proposal inspired by the selfish agenda of one man. A man who put his needs ahead of the best interest of the citizens of Costa Mesa… Councilman Gary Monahan.

In a time of complacency and apathy… Special thanks goes to those local residents, and park patrons, who’s hard work and tireless efforts have succeeded in preserving TeWinkle Park, the “Jewel of the City” for generations to come!

Latest update… This city has solicited bids for parking, traffic, and noise consultants to evaluate the impact of BLD proposal. All on the tax payer dime. So much for Mr. Monahan’s “No cost to the city of Costa Mesa” commitment. Inquiries to the city staff indicate that further efforts on the project await the results of the consultants studies… Tentatively scheduled for sometime in late September. Please share this post!

In Poor Richard's Almanack, Benjamin Franklin popularized the idiom we love to quote but have a difficult time applying to our daily lives: Haste makes waste.

The following is the official notice from the city’s website:http://www.ci.costa-mesa.ca.us/docs/flyers/2012-06-23-Park_Tour_Notice.pdf
