🌟 Unique Story: With winemaking roots at its Sanger location dating back to the 1890s and an official founding in 1939, Gibson Wine Company has a long history in California wine. Today, Head Winemaker Pablo Avalos is the only winemaker overseeing its more than 150,000-case production—and his personality even makes its way onto the bottle! Check out Gibson’s playful Payaso de Rodeo (“Rodeo Clown”) series and see if you can spot a familiar winemaker’s face on the label. From table wines to the traditional dessert wines that have been part of Gibson’s history from the beginning, Pablo’s range is on full display with this year’s Best of Class Cream Sherry.

🍷 A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR WINE COURTYARD VOLUNTEERS! 🍷

The Orange County Wine Society extends our heartfelt thanks to the more than 200 volunteers who helped make the Wine Courtyard possible at this year’s OC Fair. Your time, energy and commitment to OCWS and wine education are what make it all happen. We truly could not do it without you!

This video celebrates the volunteers who worked behind the Wine Courtyard counter, shown in order by the number of shifts they volunteered. Volunteers—see if you can find yourself as the names roll by! 👀🍷

🌟 Unique Story: For more than 50 years, Quady Winery has helped pioneer California’s sweet and fortified wine traditions, beginning when founders Andrew and Laurel Quady produced their first Zinfandel port in 1975. That history has a special connection to the OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition: Andrew is a former competition judge, while Head Winemaker Darin Peterson—who has been crafting Quady wines for more than 20 years—is a current judge. This year, the tradition continues with Quady’s 2018 Starboard Vintage earning Best of Class.

🌟 Unique Story: Serendipity Cellars is truly a family venture that began, appropriately, by chance. Bryan Lucay, a longtime construction professional, discovered a passion for wine after a construction project introduced Bryan and Michele to the Ceja family; what started with a few vines and family-and-friends crushes in their garage eventually grew into their Brentwood winery. Today, Bryan continues to run his construction businesses while crafting award-winning wines that showcase Contra Costa fruit—including this Double Gold Tempranillo from Lucier Family Vineyards.

After years of producing award-winning wines and sharing them through tastings and pop-ups—including their current pours in downtown Livermore—Darin and Gail are preparing to open Cellar 13’s first permanent home at the former Cuda Ridge Winery location on Arroyo Road. Darin, one of the few Native American professional winemakers in the U.S., brings his Cherokee heritage into the winery through Cherokee-named Bordeaux blends and original label artwork created by his uncle, Cherokee artist John Balloue.

Tim, Chrysanne and friends spent countless harvests there as the self-described “cellar rats,” an experience that helped inspire today’s Arroyo Cellars and its focus on handcrafted, small-lot Livermore Valley wines.
