SOY Youth Council is preparing for their student-run Candidate Forum on Oct. 27th, one week before the election. They want the candidates to speak on the important issues that affect the youth. The two student moderators, Alejandro Sanchez, NMUSD Student Board Rep for Costa Mesa High School, and Delayla Perez, Student Body President of Estancia High School, led a mock forum with SOY students from various high schools asking questions. Damian Jiménez practiced being the time keeper. They have invited the two candidates for Mayor of Costa Mesa, the two candidates for City Council District 4, SOY’s District, and the two candidates for NMUSD Trustee Area 7, also SOY’s district. Many SOY students have turned 18, and many of their siblings in college are also eligible to vote. They are also encouraging their neighbors, friends and families to come and also their teachers and fellow students. Save the date, and come out to support our students and to learn about the candidates running for local races. Voting is your right! Don’t forget to VOTE!!

A group of SOY Youth Council Members and staff are having a wonderful time at the Hathaway Catalina Island Leadership Experience Program in Howland’s Landing. They are there on a 3-day, 2-night trip thanks to the Catalina Island Conservancy. We are so honored to be able to provide this incredible experience for students from 4 different high schools in Newport-Mesa as they team-build and learn leadership skills to bring back to us at SOY and to their high schools. The Hathaway Experience will also host another 14 SOY Youth Council members in November. Along with leadership skills, they are developing interests in environmental conservancy and advocacy. So glad the weather and the water is wonderful! Enjoy!!

SOY’s first College Career Panel with Medical professionals was a huge success. 70 students from 4 NMUSD high schools packed the room and listened to the journeys and work experience of 3 incredible doctors and nurses. Thanks to: Dr. Jorge Castellanos, a cardiologist at Hoag with his own practice, JMC Medical Group; Emme Russell, Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Ventura County with her own practice—Integrated Mental Health for Children, Adolescents and Young Adults; and SOY Alum and EHS Alum Erik Cerros, RN at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in San Diego, with a speciality in chemotherapy and treating cancer patients. The speakers shared the importance of taking advantage of all opportunities available to you and choose the path that interests you more….follow your passions and work will be enjoyable even though it might be hard. Thanks so much panelists for coming to share your wisdom with our students among your busy schedule! Jorge was on call and at the end of the session had to rush to Hoag. And thanks Emme and Erik for driving so far to be with us! Wow! Amazing!

So great to have our new board member, Teresa Chavez, an AVP at Pacific Life in Newport Beach, SOY Mentor and first generation college graduate, share her story with our parents. “I wish I had a program like SOY when I was applying to college,” she said. We also had David Perez, a SOY Alum and EHS graduate on his way to UCSB on a SOY and Lamb family scholarship, share his experiences in the SOY program since 8th grade. The room was packed with parents and their students up to 11th grade who came to learn more about the college bound program from SOY staff. Next Thursday is a meeting just for seniors and their parents. Sign up for the college bound program with Julia in the Academic Room.
