Founder of Walking Shield, Inc.

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our Beloved Founder, Phil “Walking Shield” Stevens. We honor the life and legacy of Phillip J. Stevens, a visionary leader, compassionate advocate, and unwavering champion for American Indian communities.

Phil believed that education, healthcare, and opportunity could transform lives. With that vision, he founded Walking Shield, Inc., creating an organization dedicated to empowering American Indian students and families through scholarships, health initiatives, workforce development, and community support. His life’s work opened doors for countless individuals to pursue their dreams and build brighter futures.

Phil led with humility, integrity, and a servant’s heart. He understood that true leadership is measured not by personal achievement, but by the lives we uplift and the hope we inspire in others. His kindness, wisdom, and steadfast commitment earned the respect and admiration of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

His legacy lives on in every student who graduates because of a scholarship, every family strengthened through Walking Shield’s programs, every community partnership established, and every life forever changed through his vision.

Although Phil is no longer with us, the path he forged continues to guide Walking Shield, Inc. His mission remains alive in the dedicated staff, volunteers, donors, tribal partners, and supporters who carry his dream forward.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the many communities whose lives he touched. May we honor Phil’s memory by continuing the work he so passionately began—serving others with compassion, generosity, and hope.

Thank you, Phil, for your vision, your leadership, and your unwavering belief that every person deserves the opportunity to succeed.

Your footprints remain on every path you helped create, and your legacy will continue to walk beside us for generations to come.
