👏 A huge thank you to American Legion Post 519 for hosting a community CPR/AED training in partnership with College of the Desert!
Did you know that only about 40% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital receive bystander CPR? When bystanders step in, survival rates can double or even triple compared to no intervention. Communities with higher CPR training rates see far better outcomes — one action can shift an entire community’s chances.
With the AED donated by Heartshield, combined with this hands-on training, Post 519 is now even better equipped to protect their members and community in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. 💙 Every trained responder and every AED placed makes the chain of survival stronger.
We’re proud to see prevention in action and grateful for your leadership in creating a heart-safe community. ❤️⚡

Prevention in action. 💙 One of the many ways Heartshield Project works to prevent deaths from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is by donating AEDs to organizations and communities in need. Every placement means more lives that can be saved in the critical first minutes of an emergency.
⚡ Early use of an AED can more than double survival rates from SCA.
⚡ For every minute without defibrillation, survival chances drop by 7–10%.
⚡ When CPR and AED are used together, survival can reach up to 70% in some cases.
Together, we’re building safer communities—one AED at a time.

❤️ October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month! ❤️
Every year, more than 23,000 young lives are lost to SCA — often without warning. Together, we can change that.
💓 Through early detection with heart screenings
💓 By learning CPR & AED use
💓 And by being ready to recognize & respond
We can save lives and protect our communities.
Stay tuned this month as we share SCA facts, prevention tips, and stories to raise awareness. Together, we can make every heartbeat count.

Heartshield Project is proud to announce our donation of an AED to Access California Services, an amazing, culturally-sensitive, non-profit community service organization founded by Nahla Kayali (pictured on     left) in Anaheim, CA. Like Heartshield, Nahla & her team are dedicated to human service - including protecting lives with CPR training & an accessible AED. We’re so glad they applied for an AED donation from     Heartshield! Congrats!

We’re honored to donate a Defibtech AED to American Legion Palm Springs Post 519, a cornerstone for over 1,200 U.S. veterans and their families. 🇺🇸❤️
With many aging members and multiple on-site cardiac events in recent years — where local first responders weren’t immediately available — their need for an AED was urgent and real.
After submitting an application through our website, Commander John Pickens and the Board of Directors committed to full AED accessibility, routine maintenance, CPR/AED-trained staff, and an annual emergency response plan. Today, their community is safer.
Beth, a member of our Heartshield Project Board, was proud to be there in person to deliver the AED and provide an introduction on sudden cardiac arrest, CPR, and AED education for Post 519’s members.
This is community-driven prevention in action — and we’re grateful to be part of it.
None of this would be possible without the support of our Heartshield community. Every donation, share, and act of advocacy helps us get life-saving tools into the hands of those who need them most. Thank you for standing with us. ❤️

My Why Behind Heartshield

I’m a 2x cardiac arrest survivor because CPR and an AED saved my life. Before my life changing event, I was a 4-year starter, 3-time All Big Ten selection, and team captain for the Ohio State division 1 soccer team. Sudden cardiac arrest can affect all ages, including those of us who are young and healthy.

My goal is to spread awareness for sudden cardiac arrest and teach CPR and AED usage for as many people I can reach. My goal is to train 5,000 people by 2022 in the Orange County community.

Our mission is to influence the community and recognize the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest and the importance of CPR/AED training, heart screenings, and cardiac emergency response plans through education and action.

Our vision at The Heartshield Project is sudden cardiac death will be widely viewed as preventable, through primary and secondary prevention by education, awareness, and extensive CPR/AED training in our community.
