Do You Know Your Breast Density? 🙋♀️
Did you know that breast density plays a major role in both your breast cancer risk and how easily cancer can be detected on a mammogram? Understanding your breast density is a critical part of managing your breast health.
🔎 Here’s the breakdown of breast density in women in the U.S.:
• 10% have almost entirely fatty breasts – easier to detect abnormalities on a mammogram.
• 10% have extremely dense breasts – higher risk of breast cancer and more difficult to detect cancer on a mammogram.
• 40% have heterogeneously dense breasts – increased risk and challenges in detection.
• 40% have scattered areas of fibroglandular density – some challenges in detection, but lower risk than dense breasts.
💡 Why It Matters:
Dense breast tissue appears white on a mammogram — and so do tumors — making it harder to spot cancer early. Women with dense breasts have a higher risk of developing breast cancer and may benefit from additional screening like 3D mammography, ultrasound, or MRI.
✨ Knowing your breast density empowers you to make informed decisions about your health. Talk to your doctor to learn your density and whether additional screening is right for you!
