In 1828 Ludwig Lewis Jordan moved to Corydon, and lived and engaged in the tanning business near a fine spring almost under the shade of the Constitutional Elm. Early in the Civil War, on Sept. 26, 1861, he was commisioned Colonel of the 6th Regiment, Indiana Legion, Harrison County, commonly called the Home Guard. This was almost the only troops opposing the Confererates under Gen. John Hunt Morgan when they crossed the Ohio near Mauckport and advanced toward Corydon, July 8 and 9, 1863, on his raid through Indiana and Ohio. During the afternoon of the 9th, he and his force of about 440 men were unable to hold the rebels back on the ridge just south of town, and fell back into the town, where they were captured. They were released when the rebels moved on to the north.
