If you want to support local nonprofits, here’s a close up way to hear from the exact organizations which will benefit from your donation. As a member of this giving circle, you attend a 1 hour meeting each quarter; hear a pitch; ask some questions; and vote on which nonprofit each of you in 100+ People giving circle will support with a $100 check. And did I say a ONE hour meeting? Trust me, these people run as efficient a meeting as you have ever attended. And it’s fun. At the beginning of the meeting, they literally pull 3 nonprofit names from a 🎩 hat to choose the evening’s presenters!

Our next meeting is July15th. 100+ people giving to a local nonprofit that serves our community. Email [email protected] for more info.

Garrett and Anna Marie Hughes, both in their early 80s, have decided to age in their large, four-bedroom house in suburban Rochester, N.Y.

They love their house on a quiet cul-de-sac and their neighbors. They are in relatively good health, eat well and exercise often, but started exploring housing options while in their 70s. They talked about chairlifts and home elevators, but decided those solved only one issue—mobility.

The couple looked into senior living, but it was too expensive. The average annual cost per person for assisted living in the Rochester area is $84,000, according to a 2025 Genworth Cost of Care Survey.

After looking at alternatives and weighing costs and quality of life, they came up with a renovation plan they think will allow them to live simply and safely in their home. Unexpected things can happen, but staying makes sense for them.

“Nothing is 100% certain and never is,” says Garrett of their decision. “We’re comfortable with that.”

They have plenty of company. Around three-quarters of Americans over 50 want to age in their current homes, according to AARP.

But many of their homes aren’t suitable for aging because of stairs, bathtubs, narrow doorways and slippery tile floors. Only about 10% of homes are considered “aging-ready,” meaning they have a step-free entry and bedroom and accessible full bathroom on the first floor, according to a 2020 census report.

Unlike prior generations, though, today’s would-be age-in-placers have significant advantages.

Good news! Please support Stone Soup

Dear Friends of Stone Soup Corvallis,

We are excited to share some important news with you.

Stone Soup Corvallis has signed a lease with the Corvallis Daytime Drop-In Center for a central kitchen site of our own! This has been a dream of ours for many years and we are both grateful and excited to begin making this dream a reality.

In the coming months, our goal is to renovate the space and transition all Stone Soup meal preparation and service to this site. While there is much work ahead, this marks a major milestone for our organization and for anyone in our community experiencing hunger. This project will enable Stone Soup to continue serving free meals for years to come.

While the kitchen is important, we know that it is the people who make Stone Soup what it is. We can continue to feed our community because of the dedication and hospitality of our volunteers and supporters. Thank you.

We will be creating opportunities for volunteers and diners to ask questions, share feedback, and help us think through how this new kitchen can best support both our diners and our volunteer teams. We know that change can be both exciting and daunting, so we want this process to be collaborative and inclusive.

One of our biggest next steps is fundraising. Based on our current estimates, the full project (including renovation, equipment, permits, and ongoing operational costs) is expected to cost approximately $600,000. Through years of planning and saving, Stone Soup has already set aside roughly $250,000 toward this effort. Along with grants and donations received so far, we have $330,495 still left to raise.

Every contribution, whether financial, practical, or connective helps move this project forward. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or input about this project at any point in time.

While planning and fundraising move ahead, our meal service Will continue at our two church locations as usual. We appreciate their continued hospitality. We will continue sharing updates as the project develops and more details become available.

We are excited for this next chapter and truly grateful to have you walking through it with us. Thank you for everything that you do for Stone Soup and for the people who we serve. Hunger continues to be a need in our community and the work of Stone Soup continues to meet that need with generosity and hope.

Gratefully, on behalf of the Stone Soup Board,
John Friedrick, Executive Director
