There is a supernova in the galaxy NGC 4168. I happened to be imaging in that area a couple weeks ago and managed to capture it while it was getting brighter. Pure luck. The image on the left is from January 15 at 1:14 am local time in Texas. The image on the right is on January 18 at 1:02 am. This means the images were taken with the galaxy at very close to the same elevation above the horizon. Over the 3 days shown here, the Supernova got about 80% brighter (crude measurements, not at all calibrated). In the image on the right, the galaxy core is not quite twice as bright as the supernova. These are monochrome images taken through an Astrodome luminance filter with a Redcat 71 telescope. Exposure time of 5 minutes.

Over the last month I imaged the Horsehead Nebula in Orion (again). I used a hydrogen alpha filter that only passes the deep red of hydrogen gas. This highlights that element and greatly reduces any light pollution.
This image is a combination of 159 images, 10 minutes each, 26.5 hours! Taken with my 92 mm telescope in New Mexico. Most of the time the moon was up, doing its best to reduce the contrast of the faint nebula, the hydrogen alpha filter definitely helped.
If this looks at all familiar, it is because I have posted other versions and the fact that almost every B science fiction movie at some point has a picture of the Horsehead Nebula behind the scientist that is trying to explain why the world is going to experience some calamity.
I prefer this image in monochrome. Keeps it sort of spooky.
