Over the last month I imaged the Horsehead Nebula in Orion (again). I used a hydrogen alpha filter that only passes the deep red of hydrogen gas. This highlights that element and greatly reduces any light pollution.
This image is a combination of 159 images, 10 minutes each, 26.5 hours! Taken with my 92 mm telescope in New Mexico. Most of the time the moon was up, doing its best to reduce the contrast of the faint nebula, the hydrogen alpha filter definitely helped.
If this looks at all familiar, it is because I have posted other versions and the fact that almost every B science fiction movie at some point has a picture of the Horsehead Nebula behind the scientist that is trying to explain why the world is going to experience some calamity.
I prefer this image in monochrome. Keeps it sort of spooky.
