We had a blast learning all about lichens in February!

Local lichenologist Sunia Yang led students on walks throughout downtown Corvallis and at Bald Hill Farm, to discover the beautiful and exotic world of lichens, what their patterns show us about the world, and why they matter.

Urban sessions focused on what lichens (and mosses) tell us about our environment in town, and rural sessions dove into what lichens tell us about countryside environments; lichens are very very different in both places!

Did you know the lathe goes back thousands of years, and was the first belt-driven machine?

Ancient Egyptian wall paintings illustrate an early version in which one person pulled a strap wrapped around a wooden stick while another person cut the stick as it spun. The Viking model tied the strap to a treadle; the operator’s leg powered the cut on the down stroke, while a bendy branch provided return power. Perhaps it all started with the ancient process of using hand- and bow-drills to make beads and fire?

Do you start each day with a bowl of yogurt and granola? Our Yoghurt, Granola, and the Joy of Cooperation class will help bring this staple meal closer to home, and we still have spots open for registration!

On Saturday, February 28th, come learn how this common breakfast and snack is a great dish to scale up and make with and for your community! At the end of the class, participants can organize a co-operative yogurt production group, further increasing community self-reliance, reusable packaging, and local, non-commercial production.

We’re hosting a fiber swap! 🧶🪡🧺

Join us Thursday, November 20th from 4-8pm (during the Corvallis Arts Walk) at 400 SW 2nd Street in Corvallis and bring or take home crafty fiber supplies. Here are the details:

- Release your “someday” yarn or fabric and swap it for your “now” project
- Start your stash if you don’t have one (yet)
- See fiber/fabric demos
- Bring a favorite project to show and inspire
- Sign up if you’re interested in a Fiber Arts group (dyeing, knitting, sewing, weaving, local fibers, sheep-to-shawl)

This is our first time with a swap so we are hoping for lots of fun and a little chaos. Bring a bag and see you there! 🌼
