Headed to an OSU Forest?

Here are a few winter best practices you can help with:

๐ŸŒฒ Hazard & Down Tree Reporting
Many of you are using the Trail & Road Issue report form to notify OSU Research Forests of down trees, blockages, or other hazards. Please encourage others to use this form: https://f.mtr.cool/fqzyyfqxwc to help address issues across the forest.

๐Ÿฅพ Muddy Trails
As the rain continues, please remember to follow the wet trail policy and avoid using muddy or waterlogged natural surface trails. Foot, hoof, paw, and bike traffic on saturated trails can cause significant damage to the tread and surrounding vegetation. During or right after a heavy rain event, please use roads and graveled routes such as Danโ€™s, Horse, Ridge, Alpha, Homestead, Section 36, Powder House, and Calloway. Check out their maps:

๐Ÿš— Parking - please donโ€™t block gates. These access points must remain clear for forest operations and for emergency vehicles.

Thank you for using trails ๐Ÿ‘ฃ responsibly and honoring the efforts of OSU volunteers and staff!

Welcome and congratulations to the 15 dedicated individuals who completed our 2025 Search and Rescue Academy!

๐Ÿ‘ Congratulations to the newest members of Benton County Sheriffโ€™s Search & Rescue! ๐Ÿ‘

The Benton County Sheriff's Office would like to congratulate the 15 enthusiastic volunteers who graduated from our annual Search & Rescue (SAR) Academy on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Spanning approximately two months, our academy covered a wide range of essential topics, including Wilderness Navigation, Incident Command, Knots, Shelter and Fire Building, Patient Care, SAR Law, CPR, First Aid, Lost Subject Behavior, Search Techniques, Crime Scene Investigations, Ethics, and more.

These individuals are now ready to join the existing teams within our SAR program. These teams include the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (Emergency Communications), Benton County Sheriff's Mounted Posse (Horseback Search Team), Corvallis Mountain Rescue (Technical Rescue), Marys Peak Search & Rescue (Wilderness Search Team), Region Three K9 SAR (Search Dog Team), and SkySAR (Air Search Team).

Sheriff Van Arsdall welcomes the newest team members, stating, "Our volunteer force provides a valuable and irreplaceable service to the Benton County community. These dedicated men and women generously contribute hundreds of hours each year to serve our community."

Your heart is saying โ€œI could hike up these boulders for hours!โ€ (You know, the ones pioneers used to ride for miles?) However, your feet are saying, โ€œYou wore flip flopsโ€ฆwhy?โ€

Planning is an important step for any outdoor adventure. Before heading out, check the map, ask a ranger, or visit the park website or NPS app for the latest news, updates, and events.

But, NPS, is there a trip planning guide or something to get us started? Why yes! Thanks for asking. Check out our handy dandy guide at: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/healthandsafety/trip-planning-guide.htm
