NW Natural’s hydrogen blending experiment in Portland is risky & the lack of transparency is troubling. Hydrogen is more prone to leak, more flammable and explosive than methane gas. 💥 It doesn't belong in homes.

NW Natural has launched a hydrogen blending project in southeast Portland without any outreach to neighbors despite the potential risks.

Note that Pacific Power's energy mix is substantially less green that Oregon's overall: 49.8% Coal, 18% Natural Gas, 12.1 %Wind, 5.9% large Hydroelectric, 2.9% Solar, 0% Nuclear, 0.54%% Other (2022 Content Labeling). This is one of the least green power mixes in the USA.

There’s been a big shift in how America produces power. Each state has its own story.

Manufacturing Sector is the bad boy.

Emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases plunged 4.6 percent in 2020, as lockdowns in the first half of the year restricted global mobility and hampered economic activity. Many hoped that this would mark the beginning of a more permanent shift downwards in emissions.

Since 1860, millions of oil and gas wells have been drilled in the USA. Over 2 million of these wells are abandoned and unplugged, leaking oil and brine onto farmland and into waterways, emitting toxic and explosive gasses, and spewing methane, a potent climate-warming gas.

Unplugged oil and gas wells accelerate climate change, threaten public health and risk hitting taxpayers’ pocketbooks. ProPublica and Capital & Main found that the money set aside to fix the problem falls woefully short of the impending cost.

Tesla’s slashing prices. Ford just cut the price of its Mustang Mach-E, too, plus it cut back production of its electric pickup. And General Motors is thinking about bringing back plug-in hybrids.

Opponents to solar farms Johnson County, KS: “They said solar panels would drip toxic chemicals from their glass into the ground, contaminating wells. The land under them would heat up and kill all surrounding vegetation. The solar cells and batteries planned to accompany them would be at risk for catastrophic fires that country firefighters would be unable to contain. Property values would fall and so much of the land would be consumed that the country would risk starving.

The problem with these concerns is that almost none of them are true.”

The reasons for local opposition vary. The motives behind them can be murky. But they often boil down to one idea: Renewables are fine, but we don’t want them here.
