Friends of the Shiawassee River What do we do? The increased vegetation along the river helped reduce sedimentation and nutrient loss, thereby improving water quality in the river.

Our mission is to Care, by maintaining and improving the health of the river; Share, by enhancing the community’s appreciation and knowledge of the river; and Enjoy, by by increasing recreational access and responsible use of the river. We host annual River Clean-Up events, in which community volunteers and members remove trash and debris found in and along the river
We organize river workdays that specifically focus on the removal of invasive species that pose a threat to the river's ecosystem. We encourage reforestation of the Shiawassee riverbanks by increasing the amount of vegetation buffers along streams and ditches through community tree planting events. We share our appreciation and enjoyment of the Shiawassee River with members of the community through FUN-d raising activities, like our Annual Wine-Tasting event, kayak and canoe outings and speaker series. We partner with other organizations working to protect the environment and engage in projects that support the health of the Shiawassee River Watershed.

“Just around the first bend past Geeck Rd Park there is a full blockage and more about to happen. My buddy is an experienced canoeist, swam in the current of the blockage. Ended up with portage to the left around the blockage about 200 ft” - Gary Velazquez

Each month, the Sobaks team comes together to collect donations for a local nonprofit of their choice, and we are truly honored that they chose FOSR.

We love knowing that our river, its ecosystem, and the work to care for it are important and relevant to the Sobaks team. Your generosity helps us continue caring for, sharing, and enjoying the Shiawassee River.

This morning, I took a few quiet moments to enjoy the cool, crisp air, the warmth of the sun and the beauty of our river. The clarity, the sound and the peaceful flow pulled me in.

As I sat there, I found myself thinking about the 31 years that Friends of the Shiawassee River has been caring for this incredible resource.

And mostly, I thought about the people.

The countless volunteers, board and committee members, staff, partners, agencies, educators, sponsors, donors, members and local businesses who have given their time, talent, resources and support to care for the future of the Shiawassee River.

Thank you.

And to everyone who helped with this year’s River Cleanup, please know that one thank-you in July simply isn’t enough. Your hard work deserves applause all year long. What you accomplished matters, and our river is better because you showed up.

For 31 years, people have shown up for the Shiawassee.

I am incredibly grateful to be part of that story.

We’re so proud of our dedicated volunteer and friend, Tammy Smith!

Tonight, Tammy was recognized at the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) Conference and Awards Banquet for her dedication and contributions to environmental and outdoor education.

As an educator, Tammy pours every ounce of her love of science into her classroom. Her passion for learning, her knowledge, and her commitment to making a difference extend far beyond the classroom and into our community.

We’re incredibly grateful for all that Tammy brings to Friends of the Shiawassee River and for the impact she continues to make through her passion for education and the environment.
