Friends of the Shiawassee River

Friends of the Shiawassee River What do we do? The increased vegetation along the river helped reduce sedimentation and nutrient loss, thereby improving water quality in the river.

Our mission is to Care, by maintaining and improving the health of the river; Share, by enhancing the community’s appreciation and knowledge of the river; and Enjoy, by by increasing recreational access and responsible use of the river. We host annual River Clean-Up events, in which community volunteers and members remove trash and debris found in and along the river
We organize river workdays tha

t specifically focus on the removal of invasive species that pose a threat to the river's ecosystem. We encourage reforestation of the Shiawassee riverbanks by increasing the amount of vegetation buffers along streams and ditches through community tree planting events. We share our appreciation and enjoyment of the Shiawassee River with members of the community through FUN-d raising activities, like our Annual Wine-Tasting event, kayak and canoe outings and speaker series. We partner with other organizations working to protect the environment and engage in projects that support the health of the Shiawassee River Watershed.

We have a feeling a few new fly anglers were hooked last night. 🎣

What a great evening at our very first Fly Fishing Fundamentals workshop at McCurdy Park!
In partnership with the Red Cedar Fly Fishers, participants learned the basics of fly fishing through discussions on equipment, casting techniques, and strategy before heading outside for hands-on practice. The highlight of the night was the one-on-one instruction and encouragement from experienced anglers who generously shared their time and knowledge.
Thank you to the Red Cedar Fly Fishers and everyone who joined us for helping make this first-time event such a success. This is just the beginning! Stay tuned as we continue to expand our fly fishing programming with future workshops, opportunities to get on the water, and new ways to connect with the Shiawassee River through learning, recreation, and stewardship.

The best defense against invasive species starts with us. Whether you’re paddling the Shiawassee, hiking a trail, or launching a boat, taking a few extra minutes to PlayCleanGo helps protect the places we love. Learn how simple actions can make a big difference. ⬇️

🌿 It’s PlayCleanGo Awareness Week! 🌿

Whether you're hitting the trails, launching a boat, or spending time by the water, you can help stop the spread of invasive species.

Invasive species often move to new places when seeds, plant fragments, mud, or aquatic organisms hitch a ride on boats, trailers, boots, pets, and outdoor equipment. Once introduced, they can disrupt ecosystems, threaten native species, and impact the places we love to fish, paddle, hunt, and explore.

Do your part to keep Michigan’s waters healthy. Small actions make a big difference in protecting our lakes, rivers, and wetlands. PlayCleanGo

Monday evening in Owosso, and it looks like the Shiawassee River had a good day. Calm water, beautiful scenery, and another reminder of what a special natural resource we have right here in our backyard. Thank you to Kyra for sending this pic.
