Spring Conference is this Friday, March 11th! At 2PM, join us for a keynote address from Judith Enck, President of Beyond Plastics and former EPA Administrator, Region 2 as well as a NYPIRG alum! Learn more about the power of student power, and how Judith used her experiences as a student advocate to fuel her career.
Following the keynote, we will be hosting our section panel discussion of the day, “Environmental Justice Will Take Grassroots Activism From Across the State”. Grassroots organizers from around the state will come together to speak about urgent environmental fights going on in their communities.
The threats facing our planet are vast and New York State has its work cut out for it. NY currently only gets about 5% of its electricity from wind and solar, toxic air and water pollution continue to put our communities at risk, and new projects – from power plants to cryptomining operations – that prop up fossil fuel power plants are still being proposed. That’s why grassroots activists from all corners of the state are stepping up and organizing the public to push for policies that meet the scale of these crises. During this panel discussion, moderated by NYPIRG chairperson and CUNY Brooklyn College student Sadiya Hoque, we’ll be joined by environmental advocates and organizers working towards those solutions. Panelists will discuss the campaigns they are working on – from electrifying buildings and transportation, to halting new fossil fuel projects, and holding polluters accountable for cleaning up their toxic messes – and how together, grassroots power can win!
