For today’s outdoor report, here’s a quick translation of a term you’ll probably hear a lot this summer: Red Flag Warning.

A reminder that tourism season is in full swing across the Four Corners, and that means more motorcycles, RVs, trailers and out-of-town drivers on local roads...

Critical fire weather remains the main concern across western Colorado and northeastern Utah heading into the weekend.

The National Weather Service says Red Flag Warnings are in effect Friday afternoon as dry air, warm temperatures and gusty winds continue across the region. Forecasters say gusts could reach around 30 miles per hour in some areas.

A weak push of moisture could bring more clouds Saturday and a chance of showers or thunderstorms Sunday, especially near the San Juans and the Colorado-New Mexico border. But it is still unclear whether storms will bring meaningful rainfall or mostly lightning and gusty winds.

By next week, hotter, drier and windier weather is expected to return.

Stay firewise out there.

June is a good time to make sure you’re signed up for local emergency alerts.

Residents in Montezuma and Dolores counties can register for Everbridge alerts through each county’s website. The system can send notifications about wildfire activity, evacuations, road closures, severe weather, flooding and other emergencies.

Conditions can change quickly this time of year, from smoky highways and dry lightning to sudden runoff after heavy rain. Signing up ahead of time means you can get alerts by phone, text or email before you’re scrambling for information.

Find Everbridge sign-up links on the Montezuma County and Dolores County websites.

Mail Ballot Tips from the Montezuma County Clerk & Recorder's Office

Ballots for the June 30, 2026 Election are on their way! Here are a few important reminders to help ensure your vote is counted:

Your ballot packet includes:
• Official ballot
• Secrecy sleeve with instructions
• Return envelope

Unaffiliated voters will receive both Democratic and Republican Party ballots. Only return one ballot.

Use a blue or black ink pen that will not bleed through the paper.

Completely fill in the oval next to your choices.

You do not have to vote every race or issue. Leave any contests blank if you choose.

Be sure to check both sides of your ballot for additional content.

Place your completed ballot inside the secrecy sleeve and then into the return envelope.

!!! Don't forget to sign the signature affidavit on the back of the return envelope. Your signature is required so election officials can verify that the ballot was submitted by the intended voter.

Return voted ballots and replacement ballots to:

Montezuma County Clerk & Recorder
140 W. Main Street, Suite 1
Cortez, CO 81321

All ballots must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

Every vote matters—thank you for participating in the election process!

The Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Council is considering an agreement that could expand counseling services in White Mesa.

At a May 26 meeting, White Mesa representative Contessa Talahash presented a proposed agreement with San Juan Counseling Services. The proposal would allow providers to offer counseling, referrals and related support directly in White Mesa, rather than requiring community members to travel for care.

Council members voiced broad support, citing concerns about transportation barriers, substance use, grief and gaps in access to services.

The agreement was not formally approved at that meeting. Council members asked White Mesa officials to bring the proposal back in resolution form at the council’s next meeting today.

It’s baby wildlife season across the Four Corners, and a young animal by itself is not always in trouble.

Fawns, young birds, rabbits and other wildlife are often left alone while a parent feeds nearby. The best thing people can usually do is keep their distance, keep pets away and leave the animal where it is.

If an animal is clearly injured, in immediate danger, or you know the parent is dead, contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before stepping in.

The rule: care from a distance.
