In April, 15 young leaders with the School Community Youth Collaborative joined us to assist with a very exciting project at Fozzie's Farm. With their help, we potted 137 bare-root seedlings that will one day become fully grown trees and shrubs planted around the farm and at other restoration project sites in the region!

This effort involved sourcing and transporting 3,000 pounds of topsoil, and mixing that with coconut coir, perlite, manure, and red clay loam from the farm. Among the trees potted were Ponderosa Pines, Buffaloberry, Serviceberry, Sumac, and many more. Thanks again to the folks at SCYC for lending a hand. We look forward to all the shade, oxygen, and carbon sequestering they'll one day provide!

Another pretty great day at the "office" for our Stewardship Coordinator, watching happy cows graze, hearing Sage Thrashers sing, and taking in the views from a 1,760-acre property nestled at the base of Mesa Verde National Park.

This property was by MLC in 2024 through a conservation easement, thanks to the support of Keep It Colorado and the Gates Family Foundation, all of our members and donors, and, of course, the incredible landowners who chose to conserve this land for wildlife and agricultural heritage for generations to come.

A few of our team members are back from a quick trip to Colorado Springs where we had the opportunity to share alongside our partners at Trees, Water & People about our Traditional Harvest and Road 39 Restoration Projects with a statewide audience of conservation and recreation professionals at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Partners in the Outdoors conference.

We are thrilled to see such excitement and interest in our efforts and look forward to working with land trust partners, land management partners, and funding partners to expand this work far beyond our Southwest Colorado region.

Springtime means our Stewardship Coordinator, Camryn, is back in the field starting her work to visit all of the beautiful conserved properties that MLC has protected over the years in Montezuma, Dolores, and San Miguel Counties.

These photos are from a conserved 1,800-acre historical ranch neighboring the San Juan National Forest on Haycamp Mesa. The landowners of the ranch are working on conducting a prescribed fire in order to manage fuels and enhance the grazing on the property.

Tickets are still available for our screening of Rooted: A Story of Rematriation happening tomorrow evening at the Sunflower Theatre at KSJD!

Rooted is a short documentary highlighting the Traditional Harvest Project— a collaborative effort supporting Indigenous land access and revitalizing connections to culturally significant plants and landscapes across Southwest Colorado.

🎬 The film showcases on-the-ground restoration work, including the County Road 39 project along the Mancos River, where low-tech, process-based approaches are helping heal riverscapes while supporting cultural access and ecological resilience.

🗣️ After the screening, stay for a panel discussion featuring filmmaker Treston Chee of Trees, Water & People, staff from MLC and Mountain Studies Institute, and landowners involved in the project.
