Cortez Makerspace's first-ever Fall Maker Fest is five weekends of workshops, a Maker Market, and a Teen Dance Party to close out Halloween.

Volunteer-organized, open to everyone, and every dollar raised goes right back into our workshops and youth programs.

Vendor spots for the Fall Maker Market are still open, and October 24th is closer than it looks. If you make it, bake it, throw it, stitch it, or carve it, there's a table here for you.

It's a volunteer-led community fundraiser supporting the Cortez Makerspace, which means every table helps keep the tools running and the doors open for the whole Four Corners.

🎃 CALL FOR DONATIONS: Help Us Build a Halloween Costume Shop! 👻

The Makerspace is putting together a Halloween Pop-Up Costume Shop to help local kids, teens, and adults find affordable, creative costumes right here in our community! And we need your help filling it. 🧙‍♀️🤠🦸‍♂️🧚

We're looking for new or gently used Halloween costumes in ALL sizes (kids through adults). Plus all those fun, strange, sparkly, silly things hiding in your closets that could become a great costume!

We'd love donations of:
🎃 Halloween costumes - all sizes
🎩 Hats - witch hats, cowboy hats, top hats, fedoras, crowns, tiaras & more
🧣 Scarves, boas, bandanas, shawls & capes
👓 Costume glasses & sunglasses
💎 Costume jewelry, pearls, belts, suspenders, bow ties & neckties
👑 Wigs, masks, ears, horns & headbands
🧤 Gloves & other costume accessories
🧚 Fairy wings & other costume pieces
🪄 Wands and lightweight costume props
And don't forget the weird stuff in your closet!

We'd also LOVE clothing that can become a costume, like...
Old suits and jackets, bridesmaid or prom dresses, lab coats, scrubs, overalls, coveralls, robes, vests, Hawaiian shirts, flannels, funky vintage clothes, dance or cheer outfits, sports jerseys, camouflage, sequins, faux fur and anything else that makes you think:
“I have no idea why I'm keeping this...but somebody could make an amazing Halloween costume out of it.” 😂

🧵 Fabric and costume-making materials are welcome, too!
Interesting fabric, felt, tulle, ribbon, faux fur, feathers and other materials can help our Makerspace creators turn donated treasures into something completely new.

Our goal is to create a fun place where someone can find a complete costume or mix, match and MAKE one of their own. So clean out those costume bins, closets and forgotten boxes and help us stock the shop!

Makers, we're saving you a table. 🍂

The Fall Maker Market is coming October 24th, and we're looking for local makers, vendors, and artisans to fill it. Potters, bakers, woodworkers, jewelers, candle people, the person who crochets things nobody else thinks to crochet — you all belong here.

Some kids ran a lemonade stand this summer. These kids ran a business! 🐾

Meet the Hero Makers. This summer, kids ages 8–13 came to the Cortez Makerspace through the Pinon Project and built an actual business from the ground up. They studied business models, set their own prices, developed a brand, and pitched their ideas out loud to a room.

Then they made everything themselves. They ran laser engravers, designed buckles in Tinkercad, printed them in 3D, and hand braided paracord stitch by stitch. When something came out wrong, they made it again.

What they made:
🐾 Leather Collars — laser engraved with original student designs
🪢 Paracord Collars — hand braided, stitch by stitch
🔒 3D Printed Buckles — designed in Tinkercad by the students
🏷️ Custom Acrylic ID Tags — designed in graphic design software
🎨 Stickers & 💌 Note Cards — original artwork by the team

Every dollar goes straight to the Cortez Animal Shelter. You can pick them up at the Makers Market inside the Makerspace.

But the collars aren't really the point. Over eight weeks these kids practiced resilience when things didn't work, confidence to speak up, empathy for their community, and the grit to start a project over from scratch. They laughed, they competed, they failed, they improved, and they showed up every single week ready to try again.

A huge thank you to the Pinon Project. This program simply doesn't exist without them and their commitment to empowering youth in Southwest Colorado with the skills, confidence, and creativity to become the next generation of community leaders and innovators. Makers and creators living within 150 miles of the Four Corners are invited to submit original projects in a competition hosted by Fundamental Needs.
