Ivy was five months old when she graduated from the LENA Start program with her parents Teresa and Isaiah. Now, the family is featured in a new documentary called The Right to Read, from director Jenny Mackenzie and executive producer LeVar Burton.

After Teresa participated in LENA Start as a parent, she kept learning about early childhood development and became a LENA Start facilitator herself, leading groups of parents through the program with Virginia Beach GrowSmart.

Evidence-based programs like LENA Start, designed to engage families and help them learn how to increase conversation with their children during the first few years of life, are part of the solution to increasing literacy rates. As Burton has said, "Early childhood literacy is a civil rights issue."
