The East Bay shoreline is on track to get greener.

A former horse racing track in Albany and an industrial lot on the Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline in East Oakland are being transformed into waterfront parks. Together, the two projects could add 168 acres of public green space and shoreline access to the East Bay.

New plans could transform Golden Gate Fields and an Oakland industrial lot into public parks, with sea-level rise resilience built in.

One of the biggest scams promoted by the fossil fuel industry is “carbon capture and storage,” supposedly capturing carbon dioxide from big industrial emitters and sending it through pipes to where it is stored underground.

In addition to the fact that most carbon capture projects fail to capture some of the carbon they claim to capture, pipes carrying captured CO2 endanger the communities and environments they run through. If the CO2 leaks into the air, it displaces oxygen and literally causes suffocation.

If any water gets into a CO2 pipeline, it interacts with the CO2 to form a corrosive acid that can cause more leaks, further polluting the water..

Despite all this, California passed a law in 2022 to advance CCS. Now the California Air Resources Board is drafting regulations to govern these projects. Big Oil will be pushing hard for weak regulations.

CCS is a dangerous distraction from real climate action. But since the legislation permitting it has passed, we need to fight for stronger safety regulations.
