As California’s legislative session ends, CANP is proud of how our advocacy advanced policies that support patient access and remove unnecessary barriers to NP practice.
Below is a look at the bills CANP helped advance through the Legislature that are now awaiting the governor's signature:
• SB 1088 – Modernizes and clarifies statutory language, consistent with existing law and practice as pursuant to AB 890 by allowing NPs practicing with 103 or 104 certification to sign POLST forms without physician supervision, giving NPs in primary care, hospice, and palliative care a clearer role in supporting patients through end-of-life care decisions.
• AB 1973 – Expands NPs' authority to provide abortion services beyond the first trimester, protecting and expanding access to reproductive healthcare for women across California.
• AB 1696 – Removes physician supervision requirements for certified nurse midwives providing obstetric emergency care in labor and delivery, obstetric triage, and dedicated emergency obstetric evaluation units.
• SB 1302 – Extends the Board of Registered Nursing's operating authority until 2031, ensuring continued oversight and licensure of California's nursing workforce.
