FORGIVENESS: THE CHAIN YOU HAVE TO DROP

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” — Matthew 6:12 Let me ask you something:

Who are you still carrying?

Who hurt you?

Who betrayed you?

Who lied about you?

Who walked away?

Who said something you’ll never forget?

Who did something you believe they could never make right?

And maybe you’ve never said it out loud, but somewhere deep inside you’ve made a decision:

“I will never forgive them.”

But today, I came to tell you something that may hurt before it heals:

Unforgiveness doesn't punish the person who hurt you nearly as much as it poisons the person carrying it.

You keep replaying what they did.

They keep living.

You lose sleep.

They sleep just fine.

You keep rehearsing the conversation.

They may not even remember it.

You keep drinking the poison, hoping somehow it will hurt them.

But unforgiveness is a prison where you are both the prisoner and the one holding the key.

And Jesus came to set you free.

---

1. YOU HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN TO BECOME A FORGIVER

Jesus tells a story in Matthew 18 about a servant who owed an enormous debt.

There was absolutely no way he could repay it.

The master had every right to demand payment.

But instead of destroying him, the master forgave the debt.

Then that same servant walks out and finds another man who owes him a much smaller amount.

And what does he do?

He refuses to forgive.

He demands payment.

He shows no mercy.

Jesus is exposing something in us:

We love receiving mercy until we're asked to give it.

We shout, “Thank You, Jesus, for forgiving me!”

But then we turn around and say,

“Yeah, but you don't know what they did to me.”

You're right.

I don't.

But Jesus does.

And the cross proves something:

Your forgiveness was never based on how little you sinned. It was based on how great His mercy is.

Ephesians 4:32 says:

«“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”»

Notice the standard.

It doesn't say forgive because they deserve it.

It says forgive as God in Christ forgave you.

That's different.

---

2. FORGIVENESS DOESN'T SAY WHAT THEY DID WAS OKAY

Let's make this clear.

Forgiveness does not mean:

“Nothing happened.”

Forgiveness does not mean:

“What they did wasn't wrong.”

Forgiveness does not mean:

“I have to trust them again.”

Forgiveness does not mean you have to put yourself back into an unsafe or unhealthy situation.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are not always the same thing.

You can forgive someone while still having wise boundaries.

You can release bitterness without restoring the same relationship.

You can forgive someone without pretending the wound never happened.

Because forgiveness isn't calling evil good.

Forgiveness is refusing to let evil have the final word in your heart.

Romans 12:19 says:

«“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God.”»

In other words:

Stop trying to be God.

You don't have to settle every score.

You don't have to make them hurt like you hurt.

You don't have to spend your life proving that you were right.

God sees it. God knows it. God will judge rightly.

Your job is obedience.

---

3. UNFORGIVENESS WILL BUILD A HOUSE INSIDE YOU

Here's the danger.

You think you're holding onto unforgiveness.

But eventually, unforgiveness starts holding onto you.

You wake up angry.

You go to bed angry.

You hear their name and your blood starts boiling.

You see their picture and your heart tightens.

You keep having conversations with people who aren't even there.

You keep fighting battles that happened years ago.

And suddenly the person who hurt you ten years ago is still controlling your emotions today.

That's not freedom.

Jesus didn't die so somebody else's sin could become the landlord of your heart.

Let that sink in.

Jesus paid too high a price for you to live chained to somebody else's offense.

Hebrews 12:15 warns us about a “root of bitterness.”

Notice it calls bitterness a root.

Roots grow underground.

You don't always see them.

But eventually they produce something.

Bitterness affects your marriage.

Your friendships.

Your family.

Your relationship with God.

Your ability to trust.

Your ability to love.

Your ability to worship.

And eventually you're not just angry at the person who hurt you.

You're angry at everybody.

Because the wound never got surrendered to Jesus.

---

4. THE CROSS CHANGES THE WAY WE HANDLE OFFENSE

Look at Jesus.

He's hanging on the cross.

He's been rejected.

Mocked.

Abandoned.

And what does He say?

Luke 23:34:

«“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”»

Think about that.

Jesus wasn't forgiving from a comfortable chair.

He wasn't forgiving because everybody apologized.

He wasn't forgiving because they finally admitted they were wrong.

He forgave while they were still wronging Him.

And that's the Gospel.

Romans 5:8 says:

«“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”»

You didn't clean yourself up and then Jesus came for you.

You didn't become worthy and then Jesus forgave you.

Jesus came while you were still a sinner.

So when somebody hurts you, you don't forgive because they're worthy of it.

You forgive because you've received a mercy you never deserved.

---

5. FORGIVENESS IS NOT A FEELING — IT'S A DECISION

Somebody says,

“But I don't feel like forgiving them.”

Of course you don't.

Forgiveness isn't pretending you don't hurt.

Sometimes you have to forgive while you're still hurting.

You may have to pray:

“Jesus, I don't feel forgiving right now.

But I choose obedience.

I release my right to revenge.

I surrender this person to You.

Heal what they broke in me.

And help me forgive.”

That's faith.

Because sometimes the feelings come after the obedience.

You don't wait until you feel free to forgive.

You forgive, and you begin walking toward freedom.

---

6. THE HARDEST PERSON TO FORGIVE MAY BE THE PERSON YOU SEE IN THE MIRROR

Maybe you're holding something against someone.

But maybe today God isn't asking you to look across the room.

Maybe He's asking you to look in the mirror.

Because sometimes we're angry at other people for failing to be perfect when we ourselves have received grace for our imperfections.

Sometimes we want mercy for our mistakes and justice for everybody else's.

But the Gospel destroys that hypocrisy.

Because at the foot of the cross:

Nobody stands taller than anybody else.

We're all sinners.

And we're all dependent on grace.

---

7. FORGIVENESS IS A WAY OF SAYING, “JESUS, I TRUST YOU WITH THIS.”

This may be the hardest part.

Forgiveness means surrendering your right to revenge.

It means saying:

“Jesus, I'm not going to carry this anymore.

You handle them.

You heal me.

You judge rightly.

You restore what was broken.

And I'm going to obey You.”

That's not weakness.

That's strength under the control of the Holy Spirit.

Anybody can retaliate.

Anybody can hold a grudge.

Anybody can say,

“I'm never speaking to them again.”

But it takes supernatural grace to look at what happened and say:

“Because Jesus has forgiven me, I choose to forgive.”

---

THE CALL

So let me get painfully practical.

Who do you need to forgive?

Not tomorrow.

Not someday.

Who?

The name probably came to your mind before I finished the question.

Don't ignore that.

Maybe it's your father.

Maybe your mother.

Maybe a friend.

Maybe someone from your past.

Maybe someone sitting in this room.

Maybe somebody who isn't even alive anymore.

And maybe you've spent years waiting for an apology that may never come.

But listen:

You don't need their apology to obey Jesus.

You don't need their permission to let go.

You don't need them to understand what they did.

You don't need them to admit they were wrong.

You need Jesus.

And today, you can say:

“Jesus, I give You the offense.”

“I give You the betrayal.”

“I give You the anger.”

“I give You the memories.”

“I give You the injustice.”

“I give You the person.”

“I refuse to carry what You died to help me surrender.”

---
There are some chains that don't fall off because somebody else changes.

They fall off when you surrender.

You have been forgiven.

Not because you deserved it.

Not because you earned it.

Not because you cleaned yourself up.

But because Jesus went to the cross.

He took what you deserved.

He paid what you couldn't pay.

And He offered you mercy you could never earn.

So how can we, who have been forgiven so much, refuse to forgive?

Jesus said in Matthew 6:14:

«“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”»

This isn't a small issue.

Forgiveness matters.

Because bitterness will keep you chained to yesterday.

But grace can release you into tomorrow.

So today, drop the chain.

Stop rehearsing the offense.

Stop feeding the bitterness.

Stop waiting for revenge.

Stop trying to make yourself judge and jury.

Put it in the hands of Jesus.

And say:

“Father, they hurt me. But I refuse to let what they did become who I am.”

“I forgive them.”

“I release them.”

“I surrender them.”

“And Jesus, I ask You to heal me.”

Because the goal isn't merely to forgive somebody.

The goal is to become more like Jesus.

And Jesus is not bitter.

Jesus is not vengeful.

Jesus is not holding your past over your head.

Jesus forgives.

So forgive.

Release.

Surrender.

And walk free.

**The cross has already settled the debt.

Now let grace settle the grudge.**
