This month, in honor of our community members undergoing chemotherapy, Greater Corpus Christi Community Service Unit has put together an all troop effort to collect items to make chemo care bags to donate to our local clinic. Our goal as a service unit (all girl scout troops in the Corpus Christi and surrounding areas) is to donate 200 bags. Our troop is collecting the following items to be put in to the bags:
Hypoallergenic, unscented hand lotion
Unscented hand sanitizer (chemotherapy can weaken the immune system, so hand sanitizer comes in handy)
Neck pillow
Eye mask (he or she may want to take a restorative nap or simply a break from the bright lights of a medical setting)
Calming essential oils, like lavender, jasmine, bergamot and ylang-ylang
Energizing citrus oils, such as orange or grapefruit
Reusable plastic cutlery (chemotherapy can impact taste receptors and cause a metallic taste, so many people undergoing treatment prefer plastic utensils)
Fleece blanket (thin, easy to transport, machine washable)
Hat or scarfs
Playing cards
Disposable face towels
Journals ("There is a lot of research to support the notion that journaling has a positive impact on physical well-being. University of Texas at Austin psychologist and researcher James Pennebaker contends that regular journaling strengthens immune cells, called T-lymphocytes.")
Coloring or activity books to promote mindfulness, stress relief and relaxation
Pens and colored pencils
Magazines or books (these are for children or adults - whomever is at the center, so a variety would be appreciated!)
Personal note, even if it just says, “I care about you.”
Coconut water (helps with hydration and maintaining healthy pH levels)
Ginger candy (great natural remedy for nausea)
Peppermint candy
Travel sized mouthwash
Decaffeinated herbal teas
Port Pillows
Crossword puzzles
Chewing Gum
Mints
Fidget toys
We will use extra donations to assist with aiding hurricane victims and also donating items to put together care bags for project undercover (to help foster children transition between homes).
We've created an amazon list for those who would prefer to purchase items online, but please do not feel obligated to do so! We will accept any quantity from any stores so long as they are new 🙂
Thank you for helping us donate and teaching our girls the invaluable lesson of supporting our communities!
