The Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program (CBBEP) is a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to researching, restoring and protecting the bays and estuaries of the Texas Coastal Bend. The Program area encompasses 75 miles of estuarine environment along the south-central Texas coastline and includes 12 counties of the region known as the Coastal Bend, extending from the land-cut in the Laguna Madre, through the Corpus Christi Bay system, and north to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.

Help us mark the way to cleaner waterways!

Join us Saturday, October 17, for a Storm Drain Inlet Marking Event with Surfrider Foundation Texas Coastal Bend. We’ll be marking storm drains around the Janet Harte Library to help remind our community that what goes down a storm drain can make its way directly into our local waterways.

October 17
8:30–11 a.m.
Janet Harte Library — 2629 Waldron Rd., Corpus Christi

We’ll provide the supplies, snacks and water. Just bring a hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle, and come ready to get involved!

Every marked storm drain is a small reminder that only rain belongs in the drain.

Our last Traveling Nature Story Time at the library this season!

Join us on October 15 at 11 AM for a fun morning of meeting animals, reading stories, and completing a craft at Ben F. McDonald Public Library! After this program, Nature Story Time heads back to Nueces Delta Preserve.

This free program is for children ages 3–6 and no registration is required. We hope to see you there!

The habitat restoration at Deadman’s Island is moving along smoothly, including about half of the 1,750-foot breakwater complete and over 2 acres of fill material placement beginning soon.

Intense erosion has whittled away Deadman Island’s footprint to a shallow spit of sand in the middle of the bay, and with available habitat decreasing coast wide the need to restore what was once there is paramount for the species that rely on these important islands. This project will provide and protect valuable habitat for nesting birds as well as encourage oyster larvae recruitment on the rocky surface of the breakwater.

CBBEP worked with HDR Engineering to design and permit the project. Construction of the island is being funded through a partnership with the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, utilizing funds from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Additional funds are also being provided by the Texas General Land Office – Coastal Erosion Planning and Response Act and the Environmental Protection Agency. We are proud to continue working alongside these partners that are dedicated to conserving habitats across our coast.

COASTAL PADDLE CLEANUP UPDATE

Due to the weather forecast, the Coastal Paddle Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, October 3 has been cancelled.

We’re working on a new date and hope to reschedule the cleanup soon. We’ll share an update once we have more details.

Last week, several of our Project Mangers traded in the Texas heat for the cool temps of coastal California to present on a few recently completed projects, and growing programs, at Restore America's Estuaries annual conference. This annual meeting is a great place to share techniques, new technologies, project successes, and obstacles with other folks working in the conservation and restoration space across the country.

After the meeting wrapped each day, they found time to experience what the San Francisco Bay is all about first-hand!

Over the weekend, we capped off our National Estuaries Week celebration with a "pop-up" cleanup out at the Packery Flats Habitat, and the turnout was great! Over 40 volunteers offered up their time on a beautiful Saturday morning to put some sweat equity into caring for one of our vibrant coastal landscapes.

While these larger group cleanups are fantastic and can help remove a lot of debris at once, packing out what you pack in and picking up some trash anytime you're out enjoying the outdoors can make an impact. Its Up2U! to help keep our coast clean.

Thank you to all the volunteers that spent their Saturday with us, and our friends at Beach Operations for helping make sure it gets disposed of properly! We'll be at it again this weekend at our Coastal Paddle Cleanup, hope to see you there!

The Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program’s Up2U Litter Prevention Campaign is now offering mini-grants for coastal communities to host FREE dumpster collection events!

These grants can help communities provide residents with a convenient and free way to dispose of bulky items that can be difficult or costly to get rid of, such as furniture, appliances, tires, and large household debris.

By making disposal more accessible, these events can help reduce illegal dumping, protect waterways and wildlife, and promote responsible waste disposal.

What can the funding cover?
-Dumpster rentals
-Disposal fees
-Tire and metal recycling
-Equipment and supplies

Who can apply? *Must be located within the Texas Coastal Zone
-Municipalities
-Counties
-Local governments
-Community organizations
-Nonprofits
-Other coastal partners

Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so interested organizations are encouraged to apply soon!

ONE MONTH LEFT TO ENTER!

The 2026 Tides of Tomorrow Art Contest deadline is coming up on October 24! This year's theme is Colors of the Coast and the contest is open to K–12 students throughout the Coastal Bend.

Students are invited to share their vision of the coast through artwork. Winners will receive prizes, have their artwork featured in the 2027 Tides of Tomorrow Art Calendar and have the opportunity to be included in two art exhibits.

There’s still plenty of time to create and submit your artwork!
